St. Vincent dubbed one of America’s top arts innovators by Smithsonian mag
The Dallas singer/songwriter garnered an American Ingenuity Award Tuesday for her work in performing arts.
WASHINGTON, D.C. Smithsonian magazine dubbed DFW’s homegrown singer/songwriter Annie Clark (more popularly known as St. Vincent) as one of America’s top innovators Tuesday at the publication’s second annual American Ingenuity Awards in Washington D.C.
Clark was one of nine “groundbreaking individuals” recognized across professions in technology, performing and visual arts, education, science, education, historical scholarship, social progress and youth achievement. Introduced in 2012, the awards "recognize nine shining achievements from the past year or so that are having a revolutionary effect on how we perceive the world and how we live," according to Smithsonian's Editor-in-chief Michael Caruso.
Clark garnered praise for her solo albums as well as 2012’s Love This Giant collaboration with Talking Heads front man David Byrne, who presented Clark’s award. She also earned generous space Smithsonian magazine, which described her work as “rousing,” “totally original” and “seductive ear-candy.” Sporting a new blonde look, Clark performed at the American Ingenuity Awards ceremony November 19.
“When she wants to entice the listener into dreamland, she relies not on production tricks but on chords that are as pleasurable as they are narcotic,” wrote Smithsonian’s Geoffrey Himes. “In bringing sophisticated composition to the indie-rock movement, Clark has created a new kind of music, one that seduces with craft and bites with surprise.”
Clark has been making waves in the local music scene since her role in choir-pop collective The Polyphonic Spree. Though her last solo effort, Strange Mercy, came out in 2011 – to much national acclaim – the Smithsonian article alludes to a forthcoming album that she has been working on here in North Texas.
Clark said via Facebook Tuesday she was “really, really honored” to be a part of the American Ingenuity Awards.Follow @tineywristwatch
