New vintage shop in Dallas sells 10,000 tacky Christmas sweaters
And it even has an original theme song.
DALLAS If you’re planning to attend a holiday work party or one of DFW’s many seasonal concerts, there’s one item your wardrobe is incomplete without — a tacky Christmas sweater.
This year, a new shop on Mockingbird Lane called The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop popped up, with 10,000 vintage sweaters for sale.
Jeremy Turner, owner and operator of the school-bus-turned-clothing-store known as the VintageMobile, decided to take his business off the road and set up shop temporarily at Mockingbird Commons strip mall at Mockingbird Lane and Abrams Road. The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop opened last weekend and will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, November 30. The shop will stay open until December 21.
Turner said Christmas sweater parties are spurring the demand for these tacky treasures.
“Christmas sweaters were definitely the biggest draw for [VintageMobile],” Turner said, adding that he sold out of 100 his first year and sold more than 1,000 the following.
“It’s becoming a new part of the American Christmas tradition.”
On a recent tour, numerous 5-foot crates stood bursting with previously worn sweaters. (“Technically it’s 4,400 sweaters and 6,600 Christmas sweatshirts,” Turner said.) Turner, 27, receives all the sweaters from an undisclosed vendor that he discovered while sourcing clothes for the VintageMobile.
Prices at the Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop range from $22.95 to $52.95. Local artist Al Perez even painted a scenic backdrop with snow-covered trees so patrons can try on their sweaters and take photo booth-like pictures in store.
As for the fate of the VintageMobile, Turner hopes to drive it to select places like Truck Yard for impromptu pop-ups this winter. He is unsure if the VintageMobile will return to the streets in 2014.
Some Dallasites might need the new shop in advance of the Ugly Sweater Run Saturday at Fair Park or the Holiday Brewhaha shopping and brewery tour at Lakewood Brewing Co. (“obnoxious” sweaters encouraged).
The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday 12-5 p.m. at 6333 E. Mockingbird Lane, Suite 141. You can keep up with VintageMobile pop-up opportunities on the shop’s Facebook page.Follow @tineywristwatch
