Review: Order ahead if you want Cupcake Cottage’s coveted desserts
They regularly run out of flavors -- good for their business, sad for us.
FORT WORTH If you live in Fort Worth, there is a pretty good chance that you’ve heard of the Cupcake Cottage. For a year, I had tried several times to acquire some cupcakes from The Cupcake Cottage, only to find they are sold out for the day by the time I arrive. It's sad for me, but awesome for their business.
Finally, I was able to get my hands on a few cupcakes. I believe I wandered in around noon and they were already sold out of a few flavors.
I try to not expect too much when I visit someplace new. However, sometimes it is hard if it is a place you have wanted to try for a while and it never seems to work out. My thought process says, If I after three attempts, I am still cupcakeless, they must be awesome. Yes?
I selected a few mini cupcakes from their case: chocolate mint, strawberry, fiori di sicilia, confetti and favorite chocolate.
Everyone who knows me knows I love a mini cupcake. That way I can sample ½ dozen cupcakes in a few minutes and not feel any guilt. OK, so I still feel guilt, but it is small enough that I can ignore.
These mini cupcakes are packed so much flavor, with perfect frosting-to-cake ratio, and there was not a dry crumb in the house. This was definitely one of those times I wish I would have picked up a few more.
But I just spent a week eating my way through New England, so even though my inner fat girl wanted more, I had to be strong.
My favorite was the fiori di sicila, which is a vanilla/citrus cake. Sometimes rose of other floral extracts are used, but I did not taste any in their cupcakes. Fiori di sicila is used a lot in Italian cooking, especially in Panettone.
The chocolate mint was a close second because neither flavor overpowered the other. Mint can go toothpaste very quickly.
When I was chatting up one of the owners on my visist, I learned that they take pre-orders. So, even if you just want a few, you can review the flavors they have that day online and call for them to put a few aside.
Since not enough places offer bite-size cupcakes, and add to it that these are delicious, I can see why they go so fast. You better believe that the next time I am in the area, I am ordering ahead of time.
