Sarah Jaffe sings first track on Eminem’s new album
Jaffe says she wrote the hook.
When rapper Eminem's new record The Marshall Mathers LP 2 drops November 5, Denton singer Sarah Jaffe will be featured on the first track, "Bad Guy." Jaffe and Texas hip-hop producer S1 (Symbolyc One) have joined together in a new band called The Dividends, and their combined effort is featured on the new song on Eminem's disc.
Jaffe confirms via Facebook that she wrote the hook for "Bad Guy" and sings it on the track.
The Dividends formed after Jaffe and S1 met at a jam session with Erykah Badu's Dallas band The Cannabinoids, according to The Dividends' bio. The two have been in studio with Dr. Dre, who produced The Marshall Mathers LP 2 with Rick Rubin.
S1 created the beat for Kayne West's 2010 song "Power." He has since worked with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Eminem and others.
Jaffe has been part of the singer/songwriter scene in Texas for years, first earning indie cred for her 2010 release of Suburban Nature, a catchy, folksy disc that resulted in a spot as Norah Jones' opener on tour. But it was her sophomore album The Body Wins that took a turn away from acoustic tracks and toward sample-based beats and bolder vocals. Jaffe began covering Drake's "Shut It Down" in her own syrupy style, and soon she seemed a great fit for hip-hop collaborations.
The Marshall Mathers LP 2 also features Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar. The first single released from the disc is "Berzerk," which is currently No. 4 on Billboard's "Rap Songs" chart.
[UPDATE: The song was leaked online, but it's since been pulled down.]
