Denton football player found dead in Montague County
Police found a rifle at the scene.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, the Montague County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene of a reported shooting. Upon arrival they found Nathan Maki, a senior at Denton Guyer High School, with a gunshot wound, according to a press release issued by the department. Maki played for the Guyer varsity football team.
Maki was transported to Bowie Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The release stated that there was an arrest made on unrelated charges, and there was a rifle found at the scene.
The release stated that this is an open investigation being conducted by the Montague County Sheriff’s Office, Montague County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers. At the completion of this investigation it will be referred to the Montague County District Attorney.

"Our team, school, community and most of all the family of Nate Maki, have suffered a great loss. Many people have reached out asking how they can help. The football booster club will establish an account at Northstar Bank to support the family in navigating this tragedy financially. Details on how to make a donation will be posted on Tuesday. In the meantime, please pray for the Maki family and our entire community."
