Tacos on trial: GuideLive readers weigh in on recent Taco Throwdown
Rusty Taco, but what did everyone else have to say?
GuideLive's Dallas taco throwdown reader poll just ended, with Rusty Tacos receiving the highest number of votes over Fuel City. And while we started with 20 places ranging from authentic Mexican tacos to more experimental ones, we wanted to hear from our readers if we missed their favorite places. Many were upset to not see their favorite mentioned, some provided comic relief. Others -- our favorites -- provided options that we just can’t wait to try. Here are some highlights of what readers had to say:
Some think authentic and experimental tacos should NEVER, EVER be together:
Veronica Hardgrave: "There are two types of places on this list. Authentic mexican tacos and gourmet/experimental tacos. While both are good, they should not be put in a poll together. Taco Joint doesn’t even fall in either category to me. Way too boring and bland."
Butch: "As usual, the list of the recognized and celebrated is dominated by those who are largely masters more of marketing and self promotion than authenticity. My favorite tacos aren’t on this list. You’ve never heard of them. They’re made by a family of hard working Mexicans who don’t know how to generate a ton of publicity. They don’t know anyone on the City Council or the newspaper, they weren’t formed with the help of a local celebrity chef, and their tacos aren’t tricked up with some esoteric ingredient designed more to generate buzz than flavor. They just make delicious, authentic tacos."
Randell Weatherall replied: "Sorry, but this can be said for pretty much any food. This asked people about restaurants."
While others replied asking where to find the tacos mentioned:
Rick: "And your not telling us who they are certainly isn’t helping them or me."
Lori Swift: "Well, who are they? Lol you didn’t say either lol I haven’t had an awesome taco since I left Cali :)"
And one of Guidelive's readers focuses on funny comebacks:
Chris Edwards’ comment: "The pastor tacos at Pollo Regio are the best."
Jeff Hayden’s reply: "I’ll have to go to that church and hear Pastor Tacos preach."
And then others crave no-fuzz, Dairy Queen tacos:
Owen Christian: "Too me, the only Tacos that I actually get hungry for, a craving if you will, is the hard shell ground beef tacos with lettuce, onion, and diced tomatoes, served with the packet sauce at Dairy Queen. I”ve eaten them at DQ’s throughout rural town Texas, and, those that still survive in the metroplex. Regardless of the location, always consistent in taste and flavor. Simply put. I love em!."
For one person Guidelive's 20 choices were not enough … but the “semi-monthly” burger poll (which actually just happens annually) is too much:
Zaldor Khrabree: "To everyone complaining about lack of choices, welcome to a food poll on dallasnews.com. They are always like this. Just be glad it wasn’t the semi-monthly burger poll this time."
Some had a different opinion on what customer satisfaction entails:
Miller Henley: "How about the ubiquitous taco bell, not my personal favorite, but I gotta believe their sales equal the combined sales of those listed above. And at the end of the day, it is the dollars that count as that is the most effective measure of consumer satisfaction in most cases."
As always, some of GuideLive's readers responded with real options that are making us drool:
adaniscold98: "None of those places can hold a candle to Pinochio’s Taqueria on Carroll in east Dallas."
theromperoom: "Taco Joint is my Favorite! But respect must be paid to the Creative combinations of B/Aness at Good 2 Go!"
Hawk: "Pedrito’s off Fitzhugh, east Dallas. It’s in a run down part of town but this place is a diamond in the ruff. Their carnita’s are making my mouth water now!"
misoranomegami: "Tejano BBQ and more on Coit in Richardson. Fantastic food, good prices and they do a killer breakfast taco!"
Ramon Salazar: "You should try the Tacos. Viajeros on Beckley they are Great. Plus Handmade corn tortillas big for rt price and not a small taco. Very good"
Gregg Welpe: "Fiesta Mart on Ross Avenue in East Dallas has the best tacos in town!"
JandKParada: "Try Taco Rico in East Plano for Authentic Mexican Tacos. Husband and I agree that these are the best in the area and taste better than some of the street tacos we have had in Mexico. Try the Trumpo tacos. Bring cash."
Leslie Austin: "All of them pale in comparison to Taco Ocho in Richardson. Best tacos bar none."
tamerabennett: "Taco Hut, baby. How can Taco Hut not be on the list?"
gretaalf: "The best its el.paisano..real mexicans tacos"
Kelly: "The only tacos that come even remotely close to Taqueria El Si Hay on Davis in Oak Cliff are Fuel City tacos. And they’re a distant second."
