See the trailer for a new documentary about Denton band Seryn
The doc, entitled A Canvas of Sound, is due out around the turn of the year.
If you've ever seen Denton-based band Seryn live, you know how intoxicating their folkish melodies can be. Austin-based filmmaker Ty Clark was so taken aback by his first experience, he made the band the subject of a new documentary entitled A Canvas of Sound, which is due out in early 2014.
"The feeling was incredible," said Clark of his first Seryn show. "I was hearing something that seemed to be a lot bigger than it was. They blew me away."
Per the trailer below, A Canvas of Sound chronicles Seryn's inspirations, creative process and bond between its six members. Clark and fellow filmmaker Kristopher Rutherford have been working on the film since January and are in the final stages of filming. Clark said there will be a "secret Seryn gig" that he will film for the finale of the documentary, though the date and location have yet to be set.
A Canvas of Sound is Clark and Rutherford's first film. Once the film is finished, they plan to have showings in Austin, Denton and Dallas, including one at Kessler Theater. They aspire to show it on the film festival circuit next year.
Seryn is currently working on a follow up album to its 2011 debut This Is Where We Are. (Maybe the film's tagline should be "This Is Who We Are.") The band will be playing at Aloft Hotel in downtown Dallas September 9 from 6-9 p.m. as part of Paste Magazine's nationally touring Aloft series. The concert is free to attend, but you must RSVP here.
