Saint Arnold Brewing brings beer-centric cooking competition to Fort Worth
The One Pot Showdown requires teams to use the brewery's beer as an ingredient.
FORT WORTH Saint Arnold Brewing Company is expanding its annual culinary event, One Pot Showdown, to Fort Worth on November 10. This is the first time in its seven-year history the competition will be hosted anywhere other than at the brewery in Houston.
The One Pot showdown invites craft connoisseurs to create an original recipe using the brewery’s beer as an ingredient. Dishes range from chili to gumbo to soups — basically whatever chefs can manage in one pot and one pot only, according to the rules. Desserts and deep-fried meals are prohibited, as are pre-cooked items such as meats, stocks and dumplings.
The competition is a one-day cooking marathon from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heart of the Ranch at Clearfork in Fort Worth. Teams of up to four members can register with Saint Arnold for $160.
First-place winners receive $500 and a trophy, second-place receives $200 and a trophy, and a third place prize has yet to be determined. Pots are judged on taste, creativity and the use and distinction of Saint Arnold’s brew in the recipe.
Besides the fact the One Pot Showdown is a creative event, it also has local ties. Founders of soon-to-open LUCK restaurant in Trinity Groves got their start at this competition. About half of the menu offerings at the new restaurant are cooked or infused with local craft beer. Founders and chefs Jeff Dietzman and Daniel Pittman compete under the moniker Soup Ninjas at One Pot Showdown and hope to compete in their home turf this year, Dietzman said.
Lennie Ambrose, marketing and events director for Saint Arnold, said the move to Fort Worth is not a consequence of the booming craft beer environment in North Texas. Instead, he suggested that Texas as a whole seems to be catching up to the cultural trend.
“It was pretty much just us and Real Ale for a long time,” Ambrose said, adding that he’s excited to bring the showdown to a new market.
