Movie review: Ride Along is the beige of all comedies
Don't waste your money, time or brain cells on this one.
Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) is a quirky school guard whose dream includes two things: marrying the woman he loves and becoming a police officer. Everything thing seems to be falling into place for him except one little problem — his girlfriend’s brother hates him. Ben has to prove himself to James (Ice Cube) in order to get his blessing to propose to Angela (Tika Sumpter).
James, an Atlanta cop, agrees to give Ben one chance and takes him on a ridealong. James isn’t ready to accept Ben as family, so he plans a day that will scare Ben away for good. Or so he thought.
Things get serious when James’ long-time case of finding the mysterious Omar (Laurence Fishburne) comes into play. Ultimately, Ben finds his courage, and thanks to one crazy night proves to James he is worthy of his sister’s love.
The movie also stars John Leguizamo, Bruce McGill, Bryan Callen, Dragos Bucur, Gary Owen, Jacob Latimore, Jay Pharoah and Benjamin Flores Jr.
Ride Along is an instantly forgettable, sad excuse for a comedy didn't entertain as much as make me scratch my head and wonder if Hart ever stops talking!
RATING5/10 stars – Ride Along? What movie was that again?
I wish I could label this one of those dumb but fun comedies. I can’t. It was dumb, but it wasn’t fun. The whole movie feels like what Hart’s character is doing, trying too hard. I think they use every trick in the book in an attempt to mix action and comedy. It isn’t like this hasn’t worked before, it just doesn’t work here. Maybe it's the story, maybe it's the acting. Either way, for me, Ride Along completely misses the mark.
The comedy is generic. The action is generic. The cast is generic. It's the beige of comedies. No pow, no wow and no fun. There really isn’t much else to say except don’t waste your money seeing this. It isn’t worth your time or brain cells.
