Inspired by the Winter Olympics to skate or ski? Check out these hotspots
The Sochi Winter Olympics begin February 7.
The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia are due to start in just over a week on February 7. Although it might seem as odd as, say, a Jamaican bobsled team, there are a number of Texas athletes competing at the games, including locals Nick Myers (curling) from Mansfield; Thomas White (bobsled skeleton) from Dallas; Austin McCrary (bobsled skeleton) from Colleyville; and Caitlin Carter (bobsled skeleton) from Carrollton.
These are Texans who thrive in ice and snow. This is not something that can be said about most of us looking back at the recent ice storm we suffered through just before Christmas.
The good news is that if you do find yourself inspired to try out some winter sports yourself, you may not have to travel as far as you think.
Although the much-publicized Panther Island ice rink in Fort Worth was only open for the holiday season, there are a number of permanent ice-skating rinks located throughout North Texas: in the Parks Mall in Arlington, Addison Square Garden in Addison, NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills, Polar Ice House in Grapevine, Stonebriar Ice Arena in Frisco, as well as the Dr. Pepper StarCenters located in Euless, Frisco, Irving and Plano.
If it’s skiing you’re after, however, the nearest ski resorts to Fort Worth are Ruidoso, New Mexico (a 9-hour drive away) or Wolf Creek, Colorado (a 12-hour drive). You might be better served by signing up with the Texas Ski Council, a non-profit organization that arranges group discounts for ski trips throughout the U.S. and internationally. Alternatively, there is an artificial ski surface called Mount Aggie at A&M in College Station (just 3 hours drive).
