Well this is fun. One of the Garland city council members, Darren Lathen, is now complaining and trying to get DVD's taken away from the library. All this extra spending - the horror of it, the waste, the ingrates! How dare the residents don't want to drop $4+ at the Blockbuster (that only carries certain titles anyway and is one big rip off), because they don't have the extra to spend there (or they don't want to give anything to Blockbuster.)
Oh wait - that's right, he only wants frivolous movies such as: Pulp Fiction, Spiderman, Transformers.... etc. So who decides what's frivolous? Yeah, right.
Hmmmm sounds like an updated version of 1984 - the DVD!
Here's link to the discussion (starts here and goes forward) and rationalization. Personally, I'm disgusted.

Give me a break, Ann. No one is suggesting censoring ideas, certainly not me. You and I have had enough conversations that you should know better than that. But when it comes to providing you with entertainment options, I think someone other than the taxpayer should foot the bill. Yes, many of us do read books for entertainment, but the worst of dime store novels has more mind-expanding, thought provoking potential than almost every movie in popular culture.
This is a question of FOCUS. The library budget includes cuts in subscriptions and periodicals. My suggestion is that DVDs readily available in plenty of other venues be reduced before eliminating subscription material that brings a far broader range of thoughts and ideas than two-year old Hollywood tripe.

You can rent Pulp Fiction at your library? That's full of awesome, imo.
