League of Women Voters 2009 candidate survey

LWV: What are your qualifications for this office?

Young: My experiences as a lifelong constituent of District 5 qualify me for this office. I have lived in this district all my life and I have seen what works and what does not work. I have a proven record of leadership, and I'm committed to serving this area of Dallas.

LWV: The City of Dallas has a potential $100M shortfall in the next city budget. How would you close the gap? If you would cut services, which ones would you cut?

Young: Dallas is currently operating on a minimum budget with more needs going unmet than met. We would like to close the budget gap by not cutting services or raising taxes; however that is unlikely with the city's growth and change in the economy. After receiving citizen input, I would consider a combination of budget changes that had the least impact on the daily lives of Dallas residents.

LWV: Are you in favor of a convention center hotel? If yes, do you support the current plan to finance its construction with revenue bonds and have the city own the hotel?

Young: Yes. As for public ownership, it is something that I believe is left up for debate. I am running to be a representative voice for the people and the decision on public ownership rests with the people.

LWV: What is your response to recent reports (e.g., Corps of Engineers, North Texas Tollway Authority) regarding the Trinity River tollroad/levee issues?

Young: I support the Trinity River Corridor project contingent upon the facts that all preventive flood control remains in place and all safety measures and guidelines are met. Visionary forward thinking and assembling creative financing will help to make up the shortfall.

LWV: Do you think the City of Dallas Ethics Code needs to be strengthened? If yes, in what way(s)?

Young: I believe that the City of Dallas has made great strides in ensuring strong ethical guidelines are in place and properly carried out. However, there is always room for improvement.
