Dale Watson SXSW Weekend
March 11-12, 2006
A UT fan chats up P.J. Tucker with Dale in front of the Dobie Theater lobby in Austin, where Crazy Again made its world premier at the SXSW film festival. Well, actually I have no earthly idea if they were talking hoops. I was being an eavesphotographer not an eavesdropper.
Dale chats up P.J. Tucker with News 8 Austin - ah, I'm kidding. The interview probably, and I'm really going out on a limb here, had something to do with Dale's movie.
Thoroughly disappointed when we arrived at the Broken Spoke to see that some guy named Dale Watso was playing instead of Dale Watson. But Watso played the same kind of music (even looked the same) so the night wasn't a wash.
James White, who along with wife Annetta runs the Spoke, sings a couple songs with Dale. On stage, White can introduce someone to the crowd like no other man on planet earth. Can't do it any dang justice here, just go down there and see it for yourself - it's crazy.
Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon in Austin, home away from home for Dale Watson and just plain home of the fabulous Chicken Shit Sunday. What is Chicken Shit Sunday? Well, every Sunday you can pay money for a numbered ticket, see if Ginny's chicken will find your number on a corresponding wooden board and then poop on it. Winner gets $100.
Some members of the Gunslingers, an Austin motorcycle club and/or hot dog grillers association at Ginny's.
Joy Ray, left, and Jeannie Whiteaker of Austin are regulars at Ginny's for Dale. The show this special weekend is outside, so they brought a table for some major league drink mixing.
Little Longhorn Saloon owner Ginny Kalmbach gently pokes at Red to walk over all the numbers to make things interesting.
Some people are really into Chicken Shit Sunday and some people seem to wonder what the hell am I, as a member of the esteemed human race, doing rooting for a chicken to poop on my number?
And there it is: 25, the winner. Although there was some talk that because 8 had a little poop on it that maybe there could be a dispute. Such talk was quickly met with a softhearted shut-the-hell-up-it's-25ness.
Diehard fan Mamie Ellis, of Fort Worth, stands by the Ginny's stage making sure Mr. Dale plays her favorite song, "Don't Be Angry." He usually does EXCEPT at the Broken Spoke the night before (oops), so she makes for dang sure that doesn't happen again.
Mamie Ellis used to sneak out of the rest home to see Dale shows - until her daughter, Patsy Holcomb, found out. But mom got daughter hooked, too, and you can usually spot them at a Dale show in DFW. They drove to Austin for Crazy Again and to get a music fix. Mamie's been a devoted fan since 1998.
Dale's sister, Terry Gaona (with the cowboy hat), explains the concept of Chicken Shit Sunday while working the crowd for tips for the band. She also helps out there behind the Ginny's bar, sells merchandise at shows and is one of the most down-to-earth and friendliest folks in Austin.
Hubba Hubba, Stella. Asleep at the Wheel's Jason Roberts, a fiddlin' fill-in, and pedal steel man Don Pawlak get some up close and personal trunk junk.
