Trader Vic’s

The main dining room at Trader Vic's originally had a sunken floor. But 21st-century safety codes required that the floor be level with the rest of the restaurant.

Correct us if we're wrong, but it appears that Trader Vic's plans to serve cocktails.

In Polynesian, these symbols say, "Have another Mai-Tai."

Corrugated metal covered with lacquered Chinese newspaper forms an impromptu roof, protecting the bartender-god from tsunamis and tropical storms.

Nearly everything here -- from the carved beams to the glass orbs enclosed in netting to the peaked wood ceiling -- is original, dating back to the '60s.

Party of four, your tiki-table is ready.

C'mon, you little hunka carved wood posing as a tabletop lantern, give us a smile.

Another '60s artifact, this original matchbook gets a position of honor, framed and hanging on the wall.

Architect William Baker -- he's in the Hawaiian shirt, natch -- seems completely uncowed by the tiki that towers behind him.
