Tutankhamun
Gilded Coffin of Tjuya: The Gilded Coffin of Tjuya is almost entirely covered with reddish gold. Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep III 1390–1353 BCE
Face from a Composite Statue of Nefertiti: This elegant head, part of a composite statue, may depict Akhenaten’s chief wife, Nefertiti. Important in both politics and religion, she appears here with naturalistic features, not the exaggerations of earlier statues. Inlays originally adorned her eyes and eyebrows. Dynasty 18, reign of Akhenaten 1353–1336 BCE
Diadem: The golden diadem, inlaid with colored glass and semi-precious stones, was still around the head of Tutankhamun when Howard Carter opened the royal coffin more than three thousand two hundred years after the young king died. The two protective deities, represented by the vulture and the cobra, originally projecting from the front had been removed and placed near the thighs of the mummy to allow the golden face mask to be put into place. Dynasty 18, reign of Tutankhamun 1332–1322 BCE
Bracelet with Scarab Clasp, Found in the Treasury, this beautiful bracelet was among other pieces of jewelry stored within the Box in the Shape of a Cartouche. The central image of the beetle representing the sun god is attached to a flexible band of seven panels. Signs of wear indicate use in life. Dynasty 18, reign of Tutankhamun 1332–1322 BCE
Viscera Coffin: (Front) Tutankhamun possessed four miniature coffins fashioned of gold and inlaid with colored glass and semi-precious stones, and each stood in a separate compartment in an alabaster chest. The band of inscription running down the front names Imseti, one of the sons of Horus, and the goddess Isis, who would protect the deceased and the particular mummified organ within, in this case the liver. The cartouche encircling the king’s name on the interior was reworked and originally had the name of one of Tutankhamun’s relatives. Dynasty 18, Reign of Tutankhamun 1332-1322 BCE
Viscera Coffin: (Back) Tutankhamun possessed four miniature coffins fashioned of gold and inlaid with colored glass and semi-precious stones, and each stood in a separate compartment in an alabaster chest.
Canopic Stopper of Tutankhamun: Tutankhamun’s canopic chest had four compartments, and each had a lid in the shape of the king’s head. He wears a royal nemes headdress with a vulture and cobra (uraeus). Some scholars have questioned whether the facial features indicate a previous ruler, but Tutankhamun’s name on the exterior appears original. Dynasty 18, Reign of Tutankhamun 1332-1322 BCE
Ceremonial Dagger and Sheath: So important was this dagger to Tutankhamun that it was placed upon his mummy among the wrappings. The blade is highly polished gold with simple and elegantly engraved details. The hilt, also of gold, has alternating bands of granulated gold and cloisonné of red and blue glass. The pommel surmounting the handle has a circlet of two falcons with outstretched wings, while its top is decorated with a floral motif, in the centre of which are two cartouches with the names of the king. Dynasty 18, reign of Tutankhamun 1332–1322 BCE
