Used to read all the wonderful reviews of Monica's and I just don't get it. The food is average at best. I can get much better Tex-Mex elsewhere.

Park at a meter and wave friendly at the guy with the flag. Then realize the 'complimentary' valet. Oh well, one less curb bite.

The space is large and the walls dark. A large serpent on the wall adds ambience?

Tuesdays are advertised as half price entrees! How fun! Except about half of the menu somehow doesn't qualify - cue the clowns.

Regardless, many salty chips, accompanied by a limited beer, but tasty cocktail combination start off dinner. Combination plates come off as the typical tex mex fare - you'll be full, but hard pressed to remember if it was Iron Cactus, Sol Irlande, El Fenix etc etc etc.

The waitstaff are attentive without being intrusive. Weekday crowd fairly quiet.

An acceptable choice when needing a dose of refried beans.

Why does everyone (see above reviews) always expect that anything that is 'Mexican' is supposed to be Tex-Mex? Tex-Mex is a cuisine all its own... the edge in Monica's always speaks more to Mexico City and Puebla than Sonora and Coahuila...where 'Tex-Mex' has its roots. Monica offers a few Tex-Mex things for the above reasons,..... life being what it is. But the Greene enchiladas and pumpkin ravioli are more typical of this Deep Ellum icon's original fare.

I've never really thought of Tex-Mex when I've thought of Monica's. They have some Tex-Mex dishes but I don't think it's necessarily their strong suit. They've been around for quite some time, it was unfortunate the Addison location closed. Pretty decent ambience and a decent crowd at night on the weekends. Food has been pretty good when I've been, I just don't get down that way very much.

I agree. I ate here for lunch and it was not good. What's the hype about. I get better Tex-Mex at Mattito's and there's probably a dozen other places better than Monica's

I've never had a bad meal here; the service has always been excellent.

I park a block away and dump $2 in the meter - big deal.

And last year had my 50th birthday there... it was terrific.

Never quite matched the energy of Ciudad, which closed. Food decent to good, and service slow at times, but decent.

Split plate charge for EACH plate given, not just ONE. Bit of a rip, there.

Not worth the trip to Deep Ellum, IMHO.
