Nice place. Cheap drinks, plentiful outdoor pateo area, the inside is nice, and the music is quiet enough to hear myself think.

Also, they have board games, which is the best thing ever for a drunk with ADD.

On a recent Monday night visit the Amsterdam's bartender touted Lucid, -- "real" French Absinthe now legal in the U.S. -- made with wormwood, anise, and fennel (which give the liqueur its pungent licorice flavor). In contrast to the emerald green hallucinogen of fame and legend, this clear yellow liquid is made opaque through the Czech process of "louching" -- setting an alcohol-soaked spoonful of sugar aflame, then adding it to the liqueur with ice water. Since Amsterdam never has a cover and free street parking is ample, the specialty drink's $15 price tag is easier to swallow.

Lucid is controversial among Absinthe aficionados.

Although it has wormwood, it lacks thujone, which is why it is legal. But many who know absinthe better than I say that it is the thujone that makes the green fairy's wings flap.

They write off Lucid as a cynical capitalization on the fascination with "real" Absinthe.

But there are others who have drank both the old school stuff and Lucid who give it high praise.

Clearly, more firsthand research is necessary...
