Gyros excluded, this is some of the most authentic home-style mediterranean/middle eastern food in the City. Avoid the gyros (they are processed and very typical of American fast food gyros). Choose from the specials - the chicken and fish are good but the veggies (green beans, okra, etc.) are great. You can order a sampler type plate that is huge and gives you an opportunity to try many of the daily specials. I no longer work downtown but if I have the chance to be down there during the day, I seize the opportunity to eat at Anton's. The owner is as delightful and authentic as the food.

Ok, so I always wondered about Anton because it always seems packed every time I come Downtown. Well, I was down there yesterday and stopped in to try it.
The place was packed as usual, but we managed to find a table after placing our order with the very loud, very entertaining cook and owner. :)
Typical gyro but..... I was terribly disappointed in the meat. Anton's uses some kinda of heavely processed tube of meat (regardless of lamb, beef or chicken).
I order the chicken gyro to only find the meat wasn't real sauteed chicken. Bummer.
The only reason why anyone would come to Anton is that the food is VERY fast and cheap. (I would just get a veggie gyro... IF there is a next time)
There is some enjoyment factor in listening to the comments of the guy behind the counter.
