Cowboy Chow is certainly likeable enough with its upscale "Gunsmoke" décor. Service was prompt and friendly.
The Mashed Potato Parfait as served made attaining ones personal ratio of potato, meat, and “gravy” a frustrating affair with every bite; clearly a case of form over function.
The Chicken Fried Steak entree was unremarkable and along with the Parfait suffered from a heavy handed use of seasoning best described as black pepper and table salt.

Finally made it out for lunch or brunch or BLUNCH. Who doesn't love blunch??
Navajo fried bread comes with beans or honey. It has salt on it, which I guess salty Navajos would, too. It's not all bad.
The something called like Machaka or Makalaka is two sorta tortilla huevos rancheros thing on top of some taters. It's a-ight.
Chicken pot pie is spicy, the peas aren't freezer burnt and it's served in a pot. Interesting. It's smart, too. There's no crust, but two pastries are on top so manufacture for the kitchen makes a lot of sense.
Overall, there's nothing at all subtle about it, the prices aren't bad, and the foods ok. Yeah, I'd go back. Kind of had to beg someone to take our order but didn't actually walk out, so maybe next time will be better. Looks ready for franchising, too!!! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT??QM!

I tried them a few weekends ago, and was not so impressed. The brisket tasted like an ordinary pot roast and the rice had bizarre seasoning that I could not quite identify. Also with the brisket tacos they were laid upon the bowl of steamed rice. This looked nice and all but flour tortillas do not hold up to moisture very well and they ending up being a mushy mess. I am a hearty eater, but I left a lot on my plate. Won't be going back unless they offer something better than this kind of discount...

If you're one to use the adverb delightfully directly before the adjective kitschy, this is your place. All of the details are there, from the jar full of silverware to the bottle openers installed in each booth.
A cold bottle of Abita root beer is a quick way to win my affection, but at $2.50, er I mean, 2 1/2 "bucks", I'll probably get my sugar fix from home next time.
Cowboy nachos were the right blend of salty, creamy, and spicy. Being a sucker for homemade potato chips, they were the highlight of the meal for me. After attempting to order a taco plate with 2 different varieties of tacos, I was informed that both had to be the same kind. I decided on chipotle chicken. The tacos were decent, though the sauce-heavy shredded meat left something to be desired in the texture category. They were accompanied by a bed of rice which would have been a great compliment had it not contained just a few too many sunflower seeds.
Though I was tempted by the 20 minute wait cookies, we decided to skip them this time in favor of the Django cake that awaited us back at the office.

I finally tried Cowboy Chow last week and I really liked it. I think they are still working out some of the decor in the place but the food was great and I saw a few familiar faces from Twisted Root there.
The watermelon iced tea was very refreshing and wasn't too sweet. The fried green tomato lollipops were great, as was the sloppy joe with a jalapeno bbq sauce. Just the right amount of spice for a bbq sauce and the bun had a great herby rustic flavor to it.
For dessert I had the peanut butter cookie topped with chocolate ice cream, it was killer, but be warned, the menu says to order it 20 minutes ahead of time because they bake it fresh, so order it when you order your entrees. Even if you have to wait for it, its still worth it.
I think Jason has done the same thing with Cowboy Chow that he did with Twisted Root: he has done simple food very well, and put a unique twist on it.
I wish him success in the new place and I will be there regularly!

Following in Tillman's upscale dive footsteps, the new concept from owners of Twisted Root takes State Fair food and makes it fancy with good service and attention to detail. Their "nachos" are like tornado taters with a few extra ingredients. The "lollipop" appetizer is a fried green tomato on a skewer. The grilled cheese one-ups Lucky's and AllGood's by adding BBQ. Their watermelon sweet tea (served by the carafe) tastes more of brew than agua fresca. Even the check is presented in the cardboard box for a pack of playing cards. At Saturday lunch they had quite a crowd - which bodes well if they can last until the Deep Ellum light rail construction is complete.
