The Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre will be one of the world's most innovative theatre facilities. The 12-level building will feature a groundbreaking design with an unprecedented "stacked," vertically organized facility that completely rethinks the traditional form of theatre. The Wyly Theatre was designed by REX/OMA, Joshua Prince-Ramus (partner in charge) and Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas.
Unlike a typical theatre setting, where support spaces wrap around the stage house, this unique design for the Wyly Theatre places these spaces either above or below the auditorium, enabling maximum interaction and flexibility of performance space and seating. The facility's advanced mechanized "superfly" system can pull up both scenery and seating, allowing artistic directors to rapidly change the venue to a wide array of configurations, including proscenium, thrust and flat floor, depending on stage configuration. The flexibility of the facility will allow the Wyly Theatre to host a wide range of classical and experimental drama, dance and musical productions, world-renowned vocalists and dance troupes.
The transparent exterior of the Potter Rose Performance Hall will allow for outside pedestrian views into the Wyly Theatre, as well as audience views of the surrounding outdoor areas. The glass acoustic enclosure will include black-out blinds that can be opened or closed for performances, allowing the option of having the Dallas skyline as a backdrop. The upper portions of the building will be clad in pre-fabricated aluminum panels with random repetitions of vertical venetians, creating a textured effect.
The 600-seat Potter Rose Performance Hall will provide new state-of-the-art performance space for the Dallas Theater Center, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico, as well as numerous other performing arts organizations that serve Dallas and the region.
