The oldest continuous zoo site in Texas, the Fort Worth Zoo was founded in 1909 with one lion, two bear cubs, an alligator, a coyote, a peacock and a few rabbits. From these humble beginnings, the zoo has grown into a nationally ranked facility, housing more than 350 native and exotic species.

The zoo has been ranked as a top zoo in the nation by numerous magazines and newspapers from thoughout the country.

Starting October 5, 2009, admission prices to the zoo will be structured as follows: Adults (13+) $12; Children (3-12) $9; Seniors (65+) $9; Toddlers (2 and under) FREE. Admission is half-price every Wednesday, and group rates are available.

From October 19, 2009, to February 19, 2010, the zoo’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily. The zoo is open 365 days a year. On Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, the hours are noon to 4 p.m.

Travis Bush says:

I enjoyed my visit to the Fort Worth Zoo several weeks ago, but there were some problems. We went on a Monday, which meant it wasn't very crowded. This was a good thing, however it was also the case that nearly all of the vendors were closed. At the far end of the zoo near the old west town/Texas exhibits, there was not one place to buy a cold drink. You could buy fudge and candy, but no drinks.

As well, the Forth Worth Zoo needs a serious overhaul. You could tell they were building a new complex at the zoo's center, but other exhibits are in poor shape. If you have ever been, you will know that there is a pair of massive, beautiful mountain lions. The enclosure they share is not fit for even one animal, much less two of them. This is only one example, but there are many others. The whole zoo could stand a serious face lift if you ask me.

It also might serve the zoo well to lower their price on off days, as you do not get the full benefit of the facilities, crowds or not.
