The Magnetic Fields Quartet led by songwriter Stephen Merritt is resolutely "indie" so how come their music has been used in a Volvo commercial and appeared in the film Lemony Snicket? More info

This is one of my favourite restaurants to take family and friends who are from out of town. It is located near the Dallas Arboretum and close to White Rock Lake. The restaurant is quaint with a nice view of the water fountain. They have a European menu on a white board. The wine selection is nice. This is a great place to take a date.

Franki's is a hidden gem for all us East Dallas peeps and they even give a weeknight discount for certain zipcodes, including ours! Jeff Batt, the former GM, took ownership about 1.5 yrs ago when Franhi retired back to Slovenia. He has made wonderful changes, while keeping the signature cabbage rolls and other Eastern European dishes.
On any given night there are 15-20 blackboard specials that seem to go on forever. Jeff's secret, he tell us, is to buy ingrediants that he can play off each other in a number of ways. So, he will always have a varied menu that does not result in a lot of waste -- which can kill a small, owner-run restaurant.
Franki's does meat and fowl well, whether it's duck or chicken or veal or beef. There is always a nice starch accompaniment like garlic mashed potatoes, or a rice medley, or a spatzle, for example. Veggies tend to be the weak spot, but not mushy and always fresh. Wine list is not extensive, but has a good choice of reasonably priced Aussie and California varietals.
If you like neighborhood places, with white tablecloths, down home service, anda very friendly owner-chef, then give the place a try. It's a welcome respite from the typical Dallas "see and be scene."
