5/5The hushpuppies are divine, when I pick up food at lunch, my whole office comes around to see what smells so good. And it tastes that good. Two and three piece meals with fries and hushpuppies. Okra and hot wings are spicy/tantalizing, also. The restaurant interior is nice but always crowded (thats a sign). They have a small seating section outside. A great place.

3/5Yes, a majority of the menu is fried. Yes, you generally serve yourself, although after visiting a few times, you might find your table bussed for you.
We arrive, staff friendly. Prices reasonable. Pounds of shrimp and oysters meet their respective fates. All is to be expected.
Something with H, L + S somehow works. Aw Shucks needs to visit and figure out what it is.

4/5In my opinion, the best fried seafood in Dallas. I don't know how they do it, but the fried food is never greasy. They also use a cornmeal-based batter that gives the fish great flavor and texture. It also prevents you from getting a piece of fish that is 80% batter. The best fried item? Get the whole fried catfish. Amazing.
The grilled items are just as good so if you want to eat healthy, you can. Shrimp Kabobs are amazing. The boil and eat shrimp/crab combo is also good.
Be sure to load up on cocktail sauce. Theirs actually has enough horseradish to give it a punch.
Dessert is limited to pies, but they taste fresh.
Parking can be hard during peak hours. If you're in a hurry, order your food to go.

3/5Friendly staff. Always fresh! Never any taste or smell of old deep fry oil. The fries could be better and tables could be bused a little quicker. Otherwise, my favourite roadside style fish diner...

5/5If there is better fried seafood 300 miles from salt water, I've yet to find it. Consistently the best fried shrimp I've ever had. Last time we went (March 08) the fried oysters were so big a whole one was too much for a single mouthful! HL&S put the Mexican seafood cocktail on the map in Dallas.

5/5The best place, in the best neighborhood, to kill some time! Eating good food and drinking cold beers! Just fun. And the people and traffic watching is great.

5/5Definitely a Dallas institution. It's not much to look at from the outside (or inside) but it has a cool, seafood shack kind of vibe. Order at the counter then find a seat, outside if the weather is nice. Catfish is their specialty but everything I've tried is good. I love their boiled shrimp. This is one popular place; it is always crowded.

5/5This is my favorite place for fried shrimp and boiled crawfish. Nothing fancy here, just a cute place and good food. The shrimp is butterflied and battered in corn meal. Lighten it up some by substituting the grilled squash and zucchini for the fries - they are fresh and have a lemon flavor. The shrimp poorboy is also good grilled. Wash it down with a beer or limeade.

5/5Kind of a glorified hole-in-the-wall, but Hook Line & SInker is a great place. Other folks must like it too based on the crowds. Fried catfish is their forte, but the Mexican cocktail, boiled shrimp, and assorted grilled items are solid too. Line up and order, then hope you can find a table. Props to the hard-working kitchen staff, who keep the food coming at a frantic pace.

3/5More like Hook Line & Stinker!
Okay, I have to say that before I went there tonight, my husband said if we didn't like the food, that's what I'd have to title my review. Unfortunately, his premonition was accurate.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I left a restaurant, leaving more than 1/2 of what I ordered still on the table. No thank you to the To-Go boxes....please.
It's Saturday night, and after recently returning from New Orleans, and reading reviews here that the Po Boys at this place can stand up to sister sandwiches in NOLA, we headed down to HL&S.
Order up - Shrimp PoBoy, Oyster PoBoy, Mexican Cocktail (shrimp cocktail), pickled green tomatoes, and fried okra. My shrimp poboy was just okay, no major complaints, but still had to drench it in the tarter and cocktail sauce - pretty dry and a meager amount of shrimp to boot. I couldn't get a good word out of the husband regarding his oyster poboy - nothing like the ones he had in NOLA.
The shrimp cocktail had little baby shrimp that could have come from a can, and their cocktail sauce was more like vinegary hot sauce. I am a huge fan of shrimp cocktail - but I couldn't finish more than a few bites. The pickled green tomatoes were sweet and not so good (couldn't eat more than a few bites of this either).
Winner was the fried okra. Delicious and crispy breading. But, then again...how can you go wrong with fried okra?!
I really wanted to like this little kitschy boathouse-feeling seafood joint. In the end, it just didn't float with me!
