Lone Star Wine Cellars was started by friends from McKinney who felt that the wine industry was under
exposed in Collin County and McKinney, Texas.
In 1997, John Wales planted the first commercial vineyard in Collin County and subsequently built the first commercial winery, which was completed in spring of 2003. John worked with the Texas A&M Agricultural department and the State Agricultural department to learn the mechanics of the vineyard and to grow the grape industry throughout the State of Texas. In 2000, Ron Ross in Dexter, Texas built the Triple ‘R’ Ranch & Winery, as a small boutique winery. Ron gained his winemaking knowledge by making wine in New York during the eighties. Ron worked to produce a small amount of wine that several of his friends seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
John’s 2002 harvest in August was the third of his vineyard. With much nurturing, the young vineyard produced a surprisingly full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon grape, and since Wales Manor’s winery was not quite complete, a portion of the harvest was offered to Ron at the Triple ’R’ Ranch winery. The harvest was pressed, fermented and then aged in oak barrels for two years with Ron making minor adjustments along the way; the first Collin County Cabernet Sauvignon wine was ready to be bottled. It was decided that the wines would have to be marketed so others could enjoy the great taste of this Collin County harvest and the harvests yet to come.
Lone Star Wine Cellars was established as the third winery and the partnership was formed. Texas produced, cellared and bottled wines from all three proprietary wineries are offered in a tasting room in McKinney on the Square and downtown Grapevine. Other wines from various regions of Texas are also offered to compliment the varietals that these wineries are producing.
