One of my favorite stories about this place. A man pushes his cart to our table and says hes's got 'meatball'. We ask him if it was beef or pork. His reply, 'meatball'. That's the only english word that he knew for what he had. It may not be the best around but it is fun to go to.

3/5Of Dallas dim sums, Maxim's is okay, but not as good as Kirin Court. The space is a little small and gets crowded.
Before Dallas we lived in Houston, where dim sum is unbelievable. This was the first dim sum place we came to and knew then that we had been spoiled in Houston.
Not bad, but prefer Kirin Court which is down the street not too far.

3/5Ugh - more Dallas dim sum. Got spoiled in Vancouver. We're not sure why Dallas can't do it. I doubt it's the availability of ingredients.
Yes, there is cart service and sitting for a while throwing around ideas while taking down the occassional plate is kind of fun. When you get there, fight to put your name on the list for seating, otherwise no one cares.
If you want anything with vegetables, order a la carte. Most of it is fairly standard fare, but some of it is clearly substandard. The mango desserts are not too bad.
The crispy rolls and dumplings could just as easily be purchased at the marketplace across the street for 1/1000 the price (the magic fraction!). It really would be nice to have some of those things fresh, and it can be done!

5/5Prepare yourself for a mob scene if you arrive after about 11:30 on a weekend. But fortunately, the staff at Maxim's is used to mob scenes. If you've never had dim sum, this is the place to go. So what is dum sum? It's small plates with strange looking but generally delicious food. Some of the staff speaks English well enough to tell you exactly what they are - other do not. The price is figured per plate so even if you get something you don't like - it won't kill you to leave it.
That's never happened to me, but I am a very adventurous eater.
Each server has a cart which they push around the room and you just point out what you'd like to try. Once you get some favorites you can ask for them on your next trip.
Siu mai (shew my) are a classic - pork and shrimp dumplings. I'm very fond of egg tarts and sesame balls for dessert.
Maxim's has dim sum every day and a pretty standard lunch buffet during the week.
Excellent value for your money.
