Hey, it's fried and down home goodness and a walk from my place. Great take away!

Can't go wrong.

Last night me and the missus decided to go out. It was partially a celebration. Nice bonus check means we can go out and have a decent amount of oysters before the season ends. So we get there, seat ourselves outside per the hostess' words and the wait begins. Not only for the table to be cleared, but also for our drink order to be placed and to get a menu. We order beers and placed the food order shortly thereafter. I specifically asked for Tabasco and extra lemmons. We finished the beer before the food arrived and never saw the waitress in between time. Two different servers brought our food out, but no silverware, no crackers, no extra lemons and no Tabasco. We sat there for more than five minutes waiting for the silverware, which finally arrived after another waiter saw us just sitting there not eating and wondering what in the heck was going on. Yet another waitress comes over with those items after I start in with the complaining.

This prompts what I assume is the head waitress to come over and apologize for the bad service. She comps the oysters and the crab, which were both good for the price. The Texas gulf oysters are only $3.95 a dozen while they last. Not bad, if just a bit small. She says she will return to check on us but doesn't. Instead the first waitress comes over and asks if it is OK for her to serve us.

I try my best to not be bitchy when I go out to eat, because I've been in those shoes. I cut my teeth at the old Aristocrat Hotel on Harwood a million years ago. Fine dining is even more horrid and the people usually even more so. However, it was getting to be a bit much.

Unfortunately this was not the end of the story either. We wanted to take some food home for lunch the next day. We order the Seafood Platter for $21. When the food and the bill came out it was the Papa's Platter (or whatever it is called) for $24. At this point I could have pitched a fit, but it would have been bad, so discretion got the best of me.

Maybe the waitress was new, or overloaded, but this has to be the worst experience I have ever had at Pappadeaux. I appreciate the comp, but it still doesn't make up for a whole dinner's worth of poor service and inattention to our table. Although I will return at some point, it is always a disappointment when a favorite place drops the ball.

Oh for an edit button! I failed to mention that our second look at the menu for to-go food, was another unfortunate moment. It was brought to us by an employee, out of uniform and on her way out the door. The inside of the menu was covered with slop.

You know, I understand that companies use automated feedback systems, but why can't a reply be personal when you have a bad experience? I guess when you select "Opportunity for Improvement" using their web form you get emailed the generic response. Maybe the expectation is way too high, but it is so terribly obvious when you are getting an auto response. Emails should not start off with a sentence including the word "me" and end with "Sincerely, Guest Relations".

Travis and DC, I note on your food adventures.....check out the pond before jumping in, yes their are good night and bad nights, but I do know of a bad place and will reflect and report on it's the existence, same with chicken stands, while those places of such notorious venture, we should advise the public at large...then again good luck to everyone....A/T, Urban food lovers and Code of Ethics..

I find it not so funny that when you email to mention the bad service they automatically put you on their email list...ugh!

I love to go here for appetizers, sit at their huge bar and mingle with young and old. What is it about eating at bars in restaurants that makes me feel like I'm on vacation? Not sure, but I love it.

Last visit, we got the Appetizer Trio -

  1. Mini Shrimp and Crawfish Fondeaux = meh (picked the crawfish out and left the ewwy gooey cheezy mess alone)
  2. Fried Alligator w/ creole dipping sauce = delightful savory - tender little bites of alligator goodness
  3. Calamari - really good - nice and crispy
  4. Random bits of battered & fried artichoke hearts - I want more of these - but they weren't on the menu?!

On to the Pan Seared Frog Legs w/ spicy garlic butter, tomato, herbs and grilled french bread. I had to ask for more bread to sop up the delicious leftover sauce and herby tomato mixture. I tried really hard not to think of Kermit while devouring these little meaty legs.

Most of their entrees are in the 6-7.0 range in my book. They all have good intent, but sometimes just aren't executed well.
