3/5I visited PARK for the first time last week. I found the whole experience to be a little off-putting, despite the fact that I assumed I was within the demographic who would love PARK. (I love the Henderson Avenue restaurant scene, do my fair share of drinking, and think I have a pretty good taste for food.)
The menu threw me off. Bayou gumbo on the same menu as Swedish Meatball Yakitori and Mexican Fajita pizza? Everything about it felt schizophrenic. I thought that perhaps the menu would dabble in several cuisines, but do them all well -- and I found my food instead to be so-so: It tasted fine but was nothing to rave about. I had scallops with asparagus cream dish, one of the specials, and my guest had Hanger Steak Frites & Chimichurri. Both tasted OK, but neither of us finished our plates or felt the need to explore the dessert menu. We kept wishing the place would pick a specialty and stick to it. Even the waiter couldn't recommend a favorite dish.
The place was relatively packed, with people coming in and out for a drink at the back bar. We were seated close to the pass-through area where you walk from the front door to the bar. The wood floors captured every click and clack as people trotted by, and it was difficult to talk over. We also watched people come in for just a drink and then leave. That surprised us since nearly everyone who entered had to valet park. That makes for an expensive cocktail.
