Even though we got there after the pre-theater crowd, the place was still packed. Interior was very cool as was the outside furniture and fire pit (ala Stephen Pyles).

The semi circle bar has a very clean design and is styled much like the Pyles Bar, but it is similarly small with respect to surface area. Although the two bartenders were working feverishly, they seemed a bit overwhelmed.

The food has a nice mix of Middle Eastern and Indian flavors. However, even for a tapas joint, the portions are small which moves it down the value scale. For example, we got the Naan and three dipping sauces, which include hummus and a yogurt dip. All three were very tasty as was the naan, but they only give you four small corners just slightly larger than a store bought pita chip. It wasn't enough to come close to finishing the dips. They should really double the size.

The "lamb pizza" had a taste much like an un-fried samosa, and I really liked the flavor. However, the plate only had two conical shaped servings totalling less mass than a Taco Bell bean burrito.

We also tried the quail, which was really good. But for the money, I would rather just go to Si, which we did and had an awesome time as always, leaving quite stuffed.

Interesting concept, but the food was just average. After tasting the majority of the menu all seven in my group found nothing that rocked our world.

Many items were good and flavorful, but over all it was a disappointment for a Stephen Pyles creation. The foie gras brulee left a bad taste in my mouth and the pork w/ vanilla (both dishes of pork tasted strange), squid, and tiger prawns were over cooked and dry/chewy. Some good choices were the avocado mousse, crab fritters, chicken butter masala and borek .

The ambiance was fantastic as always with a Stephen Pyles restaurant. Service was very attentive. The wines we chose were nice and reasonably priced, but the cocktails we extremely sweet and pricey. Part of our table tried the tasting menu that was quoted at 40$ a person and after we received the bill it was really $60 per person. Instead of ringing up a $40 charge they charge for every item individually and when we added this up it was much higher than the quoted price. When we aaddressed the matter, the waiter said the people who ordered the tastings added items. I was at the table when everyone ordered and this was not so. There were questions like "are the mussels on the tasting menu?" and yes was the response. Somehow we got two orders sent to the table and were later told they weren't on the tasting. Too bad we didn't eat them all.

Not a good way to end an average meal. I would rather have gone to a Spanish tapas, Indian, or Middle Eastern restaurant than Samar. All of our group have decided this was a one time experience.

I have been meaning to get to this place for awhile and finally got around to it for lunch today. Motivated by the recent hype on the Savor Dallas page, I made my way downtown to check it out.

The menu was slightly different than what was posted online but still a good selection. My friend got the grilled salmon with blood orange, asparagus and mashed potatoes and was very happy with her choice. I decided to check out several of the smaller plates. Based on the above reviews and $13 price tag, I was expecting the selections to be small, almost a tasting. Wrong - either Samar has heard the complaints or the lunch experience is different than dinner. I got the Turkish borek, fried haolumi (sorry, don't know how to spell this one), and tandoori chicken with butter sauce. It was enough for lunch and dinner. As promised, the borek was made with turkish style yufka, not the thinner greek style phyllo, and was quite tasty. I eat a lot of mediterranean/middle eastern food and the haolumi gets an A for innovation - all the traditional flavors (arugula, tahini, cheese, oranges) but in a combination I have never seen. The Indian dish was good but a little bland.

If you park in the garage of the building, they validate. Free parking downtown! Thank you Stephan Pyles! I will be back.
