Owners Brian and Sonia Black opened il Sole in October of 1999 in Travis Walk with the goal of recreating the feeling of Tuscany, Provence, and the California wine regions. The concept was born from the Blacks' travels through the countryside of Italy, France, and Napa Valley.
il Sole seats 125 inside and 60 on the patio overlooking Travis Walk. In keeping with their love of fine wines and the joy of introducing those wines to customers, the Blacks have a 3,000- bottle collection in the wine room, held at a constant 68 degrees. il Sole features an extensive by-the-glass and half-glass list in addition to the bottle list. The daily "Chef's Tasting Menu" features specials, with each of the four courses matched to a wine.

Il Sole is a pretty decent place to hit up every now and then. While it generally caters to Italian fare, I like to get their Grilled Aged Center Cut Filet which has proven to be a pretty good deal. Wine selection is decent, could use some improvement but no major complaints. One of the best times to go is during the holidays, or when they offer their Big Night menu. Essentially you’ll get a four course meal for $55 with wine pairings. On Tuesday night it even drops to $35… which you just can’t beat. Granted you’re not going to be sipping on Opus One, but what do you expect for that price? Great place to go on Christmas Eve as the $35 special will be in effect then as well. I’m not sure if they still do it, but if you sign up for their email list, they send you a coupon for a free entrée for your birthday. Only downside is that it’s only good for about a week.

It's the usual K-H parking scence. You shudder to think of what happens to your transmission.
Hike it upstairs for a relatively pleasing space. A little on the loud side if you're not looking to yell during the peaks. TVS limited to bar area, thank you.
Wine selection is decent. Beers ok.
Appetizer menu borders on tapas prices, but carpaccio is pretty good. Better bet is cheese plate and wines.
Dishes: one tuna, one scallop. Both are actually decent. The scallop comes off as a little dry - overdone vs over frozen - we'll never know, but not enough to rule them out for a second visit.
Probably better to go in the late spring or fall with the patio open.
No major complaints.

I have had some really good meals at Il Sole, however the last time I dined there the food was a bit off. Great service though.
