Dallas City Council lays down $500,000 to option land for convention center hotel

The Dallas City Council voted yes on a purchase option agreement with with Chavez Properties to put a hold on an 8.4-acre site of land for what will probably become a convention center hotel.

Mayor Tom Leppert claimed that it is a good idea to spend $500,000 of our money to tie up the property in case they decide to build the hotel. Because otherwise that parcel of land that's been deader-than-a-doornail since at least 1993 could possibly get snatched up by someone else?

According to Unfair Park, the only council members that did not lie down for Leppert were Angela Hunt and Mitchell Rasansky, with Linda Koop offering half-hearted protest. The city will now develop a financing plan to acquire the property.
