Second branch of Spiral Diner finally opens in Dallas’ Bishop Arts

The second branch of Spiral Diner, the vegan restaurant first launched five years ago in Fort Worth, opened this week on 1101 North Beckley Avenue near the Bishop Arts section of Oak Cliff.

The restaurant had a soft opening over the weekend of February 23-24, with the first official date open being Tuesday February 26.

The FWST has a good story about what's going on behind the scenes, including the fact that original owner Amy McNutt is still involved as an owner of an entity called the Spiral Diner company, but has sold the Fort Worth branch to former manager Lindsey Akey. The Dallas branch will be owned and operated by Spiral alumna Sara Tomerlin.

In 2007, the Fort Worth branch was chosen by VegNews magazine as "Vegetarian Restaurant of the Year." In addition to being vegan and "mostly organic," Spiral Diner uses recycled and biodegradable paper products and take-out packaging; buys cruelty-free and environmentally friendly cleaning products; and limits waste by recycling and donating excess food.

FINALLY! Dallas gets a decent vegitarian restaurant. Ive been eating at the cowtown location all the way back to the railhead market days. I suggest everybody heads in and gives these guys your business.

And for those of you that are thinking just tofu and grass when you see "vegetarian" or "vegan", this is about as far away from that as you can imagine (also, for those of you that think of Cosmic Cafe, i.e., mostly international flavors). Philly Cheesesteaks, Chopped Barbecue, Club sandwiches. They have a huge menu of unique items, as well as your usual goto diner-type stuff.

Plus, yes, this is Spiral Diner & Bakery, meaning they have great pies, cakes, cookies - get the peanut-butter cup - it's ridiculous.

I've had some veggie cheesesteaks before but not vegan. Pretty tasty actually.

And for the record, real cheesesteaks are actually made with cheese whiz, not conventional cheese. Still dairy, but...

Cheesesteaks in Philly pre-date the release of Cheez Whiz by Kraft in the early 1950s. Whiz is accepted--even dominant--in the market now, but provolone and American are also very traditional.

this place is wonderful! I've eaten at the Ft Worth location many times. All you people weary of vegetarian places should at least try this place once, it's not your typical veggie food.

There's a wrap at the Fort Worth location that has sweet potato in it. If that one wrap is on the Dallas location menu then they're set. I'm not vegetarian at all their food is just plain tasty.
