The Goss-Michael Foundation has recently announced one contest and three scholarship opportunities for high school student artists.
Two of the $5,000 scholarships are limited to graduating seniors at Booker T. Washington (BTWHS)interested in pursuing music or art in college. The George Michael Scholarship is annually awarded to a graduating music senior at BTWHS. The recipient will also be featured on the Goss-Michael Foundation website and in their monthly newsletter.
The Kenny Goss Scholarship is also $5,000, and will be awarded to a graduating visual arts senior at BTWHS. In addition to the scholarship money, the winning piece will be framed and hung in the director's office at the Goss-Michael Collection and featured on the foundation's website and in their monthly newsletter.
The Goss-Michael Foundation Art Scholarship is open to all DFW area graduating seniors who expect to further their education in the visual arts. The recipient of this award will also have their piece framed to hang in the director's office at the Goss-Michael Collection. See requirements for all scholarships below.
In addition to the several college scholarships, The Goss-Michael Foundation is hosting their second annual "Abstinence" Student Art Contest. The contest is open to all public and private 12th graders in DFW. For the purposes of this contest, abstinence is defined as "the act or practice of refraining from indulging an appetite or desire, especially for alcoholic drink, food, drugs or sexual intercourse." This theme is a challenge to teenagers who are tempted by and struggle with "abstinence" and how it affects, or fails to affect, their lives and the lives of people around them. Contestants must submit their work April 1 through April 19. The first place winner will receive a $1000 savings bond (LAME - can't they shell out some real money or at least more college tuition?), 2nd place wins $750 savings bond, and 3rd place gets a $500 savings bond. After April 19, a panel of judges will select 10 finalists, whose work will be displayed in the gallery April 25-30. The winners will then be selected and announced at the Damien Hirst Closing Reception. See below for all rules and requirements.
