Three Dallas-area burgers make Top 50 Burger List by Restaurants & Institutions magazine

Three Dallas-area burgers got spots on a list of Top 50 Burgers compiled by Restaurants & Institutions magazine:

  • "Dirty Love" burger at Love Shack in Fort Worth ("A petite quail egg finishes Chef-owner Tim Love's recipe with an extra burst of flavor at his outdoor burger joint. What's in that Love Sauce? Tim's not saying.")
  • Chipotle, Guac, & Cheddar Burger at Twisted Root in Deep Ellum ("Brisket reigns in Texas, making the slow-cooked beef a natural choice to join up with ground chuck for this hearty burger.")
  • and here's the sleeper: the Lone Star Burger at Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas ("Regional touches such as Parkland's pico de gallo and Texas-shaped tortilla chips jazz up this sweet-and-spicy burger.")

Parkland's burger is on the menu at its Parkland Cafe, on the ground floor of the main hospital at 5201 Harry Hines Boulevard, which recently also implemented an organic-foods initiative, with organic fruits and vegetables and a daily soup featuring organic ingredients.

The presence of the burger at Parkland would seem to be an oddity but the list includes a number of burgers from various hospital facilities.

The burgers aren't ranked numerically -- i.e., there is no "No. 1" -- but instead are broken down into five categories by price: $2.85-$5.75, $5.95-$8, $8.95-$12, $12-$14.50, and $14.95 to yowsa $32 (the infamous DB Burger at DB Bistro Moderne in New York City, stuffed with short ribs, foie gras, and black truffle, responsible for starting this whole upscale-burger craze).

Hospital food makes it onto the list (multiple times) but college cafeterias do not... sad day for students indeed.

Never had the Love burger, but I enjoyed the Chipotle/Guac burger for lunch today and think it's place on the list is well-deserved.

It really is "slap yo Mama good" - mainly because Mama should have just plain tried harder to make a burger taste good.

To Foodbevlaw: so are you confessing that Mama should have loved you enough to have tried harder?

It would appear so.

...seems I can cancel my appointment this afternoon...

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
