— The Dallas Mavericks may have lost the battle and the war Sunday afternoon at the AAC, as they lost Dirk Nowitzki for an unknown period of time in a disappointing 88-81 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Dirk left in the third quarter with an apparent injury, and the Spurs immediately took advantage by going on a 19-0 run to take the lead for the rest of the game. The win drops the Mavericks to 44-26, 3 1/2 games behind the Hornets for the Southwest Division lead.

More tellingly, the Mavericks are now just 9-8 with Jason Kidd in the lineup, including an astonishing 0-8 against winning teams. The Mavs were previously 10-3 against winning teams with Devin Harris in the lineup.

Dirk was carried off the court by two trainers, after putting up 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks in just 26 minutes. The team will know the extent of the injury tomorrow.

Jerry Stackhouse led the Mavs with 19 points, Jason Terry contributed 17 off the bench and Josh Howard added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Jason Kidd had another substandard game against a good team, scoring just 7 points off 3-of-10 shooting --including hitting just one of five three point attempts-- while adding 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 turnovers.
