— Garland’s upcoming environmental expo, Garland Goes Green, is not only a chance to learn about green living, it’s an opportunity to dispose of private papers and old telephone books.

Garland Goes Green will take place at Firewheel Town Center on Saturday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The expo will feature demonstrations, exhibitors, and presentations intended to show citizens how even the simplest changes in daily routines can help the environment.

Vista Fibers, an event sponsor, will collect old telephone books on site and have a huge shredder truck to allow citizens to dispose of personal records. Vista Fibers holds AAA National Association Information Destruction certification for properly handling and destroying private records.

The Vista Fibers shredding and telephone book drop off will be set up in parking lot D2 on the north side of the Town Center (off River Fern Avenue, behind San Francisco Oven). Anyone who wants to drop off these items should plan on driving through the drop-off line, before or after attending the expo. Only four boxes of documents per household or business, please. Volunteers will be available to help direct traffic through the drop-off line and assist with heavy items.

The City of Garland Environmental Waste Services department will display several vehicles from its waste collection fleet in the same area, including a recycling truck and a residential truck. Representatives from Vista Fibers and Environmental Waste Services will be on hand to answer questions about recycling, proper document disposal, and other issues related to waste disposal.

The best way to recycle telephone books is not to get them in the first place (if you do not want one). I found a site http://www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org which will allow me to "opt out" from getting them. With the Internet I do not need a book but continually find them on my door step thus I have to go through the process to recycle something I did not want in the first place. Does not make sense to me. If I want a book I will call and get one. If not, quit giving them to me.
