Joel Hodgson launches a new movie riffing venture, and here's the gang fueling his franchise
Alonso Duralde and Joel Hodgson
Enlarge photo | View thumbnailsSaturday evening, April 26 found a slew of MST3K fans streaming into the Angelika for a pair of back-to-back events which threatened to resurrect in some terrifying transitory minimalist fashion the glamour, the glory, the spectacle which used to be Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Thanks to the USA Film Festival, the brain trust (such as it is) of Joel Hodgson's new Cinematic Titanic venture came to Dallas to participate in a panel discussion (ably mc'd by film critic Alonso Duralde). During this informal Q/A, folks in the audience - many of whom would later pitifully admit to having been deeply affected by the long-running, fun-making, movie-mocking humor extravaganza of a series - listened while Joel Hodgson and his mates discussed how MST3K got started and what went on behind the scenes.
Joining Joel on stage were Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, Mary Jo Pehl and Josh (J. Elvis) Weinstein. Their associate, Kevin Murphy - who had been scheduled to attend - couldn't make it due to illness (as detailed here on the C.T. site).
Following a video tribute to the series (enthusiastically received by the appreciative audience), Joel revealed that he had done some standup comedy in L.A. before returning to his home in Minneapolis and hooking up with Trace and Josh to craft the early, crude MST3K prototypes. Speaking of prototypes, Hodgson was actually making model robots out of found objects even before the show - the concept for which he indicates was based loosely on the movie, Silent Running.
In response to an audience member's query, Joel also revealed that both Rocky Horror and What's Up, Tiger Lilly helped to inspire the film riffing format of MST3K.
Here are highlights of things said during the Q/A:
* "People used to send their mail through the mail back then. They were barbaric times." - Frank
* "At least they didn't put your ass on a milk carton." - Josh to Joel, re. the contrasting manners in which they left the show
* "Cult fame is the best." - Frank, re. the sort of fame where people only occasionally recognize him in public
* Alonso, attempting to see into the audience to select a questioner, says "the one behind the light." "God?", Frank asks.
* "TV is dead. The internet is the future. Join us." - Trace, re. a question from the audience about whether they had any plans to launch Cinematic Titanic via regular programming.
* "Manos was the movie where I had my dark moment," says Joel. "But Untamed Youth was the first time we sent out for liquor," responds Josh.
___________
Following a thirty-minute layover in the lobby while Angelika personnel set up the audio feed for the live riffing, those of us fortunate enough to have tickets to the next event were allowed to file back into the theater. Shortly thereafter, the C.T. crew resumed their places at the front of the auditorium, but this time facing the screen, and with microphones (and lighted scripts) in front of them.
They performed to the tune of Roger Corman's The Wasp Woman, and folks, I've got to tell you, I haven't laughed that hard (or that often) in a long time. The experience of being in the theater while these wiseacres are doing their thing is something I will treasure always. (Does this make me a big-time loser?)
Rather than attempt to review the movie (or their treatment of it), I'll simply leave you with the advisory that you should immediately purchase it from Cinematic Titanic as soon as it becomes available (as either a burnable download or a physical DVD via snail mail); it's one of several new productions in the works at C.T.
So as not to leave you entirely in the dark, here are a few selected outtakes. (Just keep in mind that I was too busy laughing my ass off to do much scribbling.)
* "Featuring the music of Sting!"
* "B-5: you sank my battleship."
* "Can you make me a hamburger that looks like this man?"
* "Finally, hot wasp-on-girl action."

My happy little band of revelers and I were not disappointed.
This is some of the funniest sh^t ever! Imagine a sold out performance and the entire audience did not stop laughing.
I was hooked the first time I ever saw MST3K and after all this time it was wonderful to attend a live riff.(Servo even managed to show up!)
Cinamatic Titanic: Brilliant.

Gotta echo, both April and I agreed that this was the hardest we'd laughed in ages. I don't know if the writing is sharper with more time and the lack of worry about sets, host segments etc. -- or if the experience benefits that significantly from the interaction of the live audience -- but that was by a light year the funniest MST3k-esque movie riff I've ever seen. And we're big fans of the show.
After reading some reviews and articles of Cinematic Titanic on the Interwebs, it occurred to me that, like musicians, the riffers may have stumbled onto the business model of the future-- live performance. Let's face it, no matter how good the videos are, there is no fan base better equipped for piracy*. ("Keep circulating the tapes.")
And the response on this show was amazing. Everyone in the theater loved it. Let's say there were 400 in attendance at $15 a pop. I'd say that they could easily have sold out two shows at $20 each. $16k per night seems a better take than they'll ever get selling online video.
My advice to the Cinematic Titanic crew? Go on tour. Immediately. Also a great way to see which gags work and refine before going to air.
Only thing that disappointed me was the palpable pullback in dishing on the various breakups and the group's feelings on Mike Nelson's Rifftrax. There's obviously something there, but no one would touch it.
Sidenote-- I literally bumped into Marvin Lee Aday in the bathroom between shows. (His film was premiering at the same time.)
Led me to realize that if I'd gotten through the limitless queue of avid fan questioners, the best question for the CT gang might have been if they knew of the premiere next door and if they saw any wisdom in merging the two events.
*- That said, before I bought CT's first production, The Oozing Skull online last night, strictly out of "journalistic interest", I checked the various torrent sites and was surprised to find it wasn't there. According to reviews, it once was, so maybe the fans are exercising some communal restraint.

One other note: I can't recreate it, but the bit where Joel (I think) was doing the "We're a company that..." faux adver-mentary voice that wrapped up with "and produces montages!" was pure art. I didn't hear the next minute of dialogue for the laughter.
Also, for the fans, they said they are taping three films later this month for release this summer. That's in addition to the live Wasp Woman performance.

John and Mike! I didn't realize you guys were both there at both shows last night. It was just an absolutely amazing evening! The whole crew really wanted to do a 2nd show that night, but we (I was their publicist, hence the "we") kept running into roadblocks.
We (now referring to my husband and other fans) are scheming ways to get them to come back and do more shows. And you are exactly right, Mike, they need to tour with this show.
They are Very modest about their success and popularity. I would say they don't quite "get" just how many people would love to see them.
So, if you are game, let's work together to get them back to Dallas!!
My favorite line of the night: "Oh look he's Mr. Know-it-all even when no one is around."
OHHHH AND Joel said something like: "This isn't a lab; it's a Kelly Kitchen." That was for ME!!!! They talked the night before about adding my name to the riffing. Frank said they should do it like Al Hirschfeld's Ninas. http://www.alhirschfeld.com "Can you count how many times we say Kelly Kitchens?" I had NO idea they were actually going to do it though!! Did anyone else catch it? What a way to be immortalized!!!
