DALLAS City park and real estate officials are floating the idea of selling naming rights to a proposed plaza being built over Woodall Rodgers Freeway, reports the DBJ.
Allowing a cellphone company, alcohol brewer, domestic airline, citrus juice maker, or other corporation to slap their name on the 5.2-acre public park and plaza would help defray the $2 million that the park would cost in annual maintenance.
Of course, they could skip building the park and plaza altogether, and the maintenance wouldn't cost a dime.
The naming rights would be negotiated by the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation, which will be leasing out the park space from the city for 90 years. But before the foundation gets to sell the name off, they need to get approval from the Dallas city manager and the director of the park department.
Members of the City Council, including Bill Blaydes, reacted to the notion with some caution. But city officials said the approval process would ensure that the name would be a complement to the city.
