UPDATED: Fort Worth's Broadway Baptist Church to consider excluding gay couples from member booklet

"Bemused, I'm trying to get in touch with you for a story we're working on, but the email addy you registered with does not work. Can you please call me at 214-514-4710?"

Mr. Orren, someone alerted me to your comment, which is the only reason I am replying. I decline your invitation to participate in a Pegasus News story. The publication is absurdly biased and completely void of journalistic merit. I retract anything favorable I've said about it in the past. Its mere existence is emblematic of a culture steeped in mediocrity.

Nothing personal, though, Mike. As Theodore Roosevelt instructed, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Sorry you don't have more.

"I don't think you can refute my point."

A solid assertion, interestedcitizen. It's been my contention for quite some time that Rawlins, like many of his cronies here, is incapable of refuting anything. Of course, were logical argumentation a prerequisite for registration on this site, these blogs would be ghost towns.

City Planning Commission meeting on Thursday could decide fate of several Deep Ellum music venues

Most bartenders, and bar owners, fear the TABC only in the name of self-preservation. Are you purporting that most bars cut patrons off when their their blood-alcohol level has likely reached the legal limit (probably after two drinks within the same hour)? If you subscribe to that misconception, I implore you to undeceive yourself.

Many establishments operating as bars in this city are designated to function first and foremost as restaurants. Clearly, something is amiss, as I've never witnessed scores of drunks filing out of a Cafe Express at two in the morning. If Dallas were to investigate these contraventions with the appropriate scrutiny, we'd find that only a handful of bars are doing business as they should be. Those should remain in existence. The rest should be brought into compliance or terminated.

We prattle endlessly about the evils of driving while intoxicated in this state, but we also empower some of the least responsible individuals among us with the right to sell alcohol. Indifferent toward TABC regulations, their primary goal is to generate revenue. Then we support their trespasses.

    Madness, stupidity, and ineffable miscomprehension!

"Recently, however, the commission denied the Monkey Bar's SUP request, ostensibly, because of one resident who complained of late night noise."

According to law, one person is all it takes. When will you people accept that these matters are not determined by popularity contests? The majority of bars in this city are operating illegally, and if Dallas were to enforce its own ordinances, few of them would remain in existence. Ah, what a tranquil proposition.

Dallas PD eases policy on past drug use of new hires

Mr. Brewer, both tasks you've mentioned, although you consider them superfluous, are well within the duties of the police force. Noise ordinances are real, and shooting video in a public setting is legal even if someone does not wish to be on tape. Lobby to change any laws you deem unessential, but don't fault those who wish to see extant laws upheld.

Mr. Morren, who has led the discussion off course in this instance?

I agree, Mr. Yost. Although people are certainly capable of reform, heroin experimentation seems pretty severe. Of course, the DPD is doing everything it can to attract recruits. Who wants to be a cop in this city?

    Ace of Clubs

Mr. Orren, need I attain your approval to ensure that my ideas are pertinent? I wasn't aware that you had joined the Thought Police. This blog is about a bar, and the establishment you claim I have mentioned without relevance is a bar as well. Alluding to a bar in reference to another bar seems a logical connection to me. Or do you submit to an exhortation to protect a business to which you claim your publication has no financial link?

If Pegasus News applauds only those who preach to the choir, it is a blight on journalistic integrity. Change the name to Communist News. You may find a fervent audience in China.

rkisok, although I am charmed to learn that you have expanded your asenal of indecency, I find it doleful that the staff of Pegasus News is forced to expurgate the smut that spews from the sewer of your mind. If you're going to post here, do everyone a favor and express yourself like a marginally cultured hominid. As it stands, your views would be better scrawled on the septic walls of Lee Harvey's lavatory.

All foundations and organizations are inherently fraudulent. Nothing is more detrimental to creativity and discovery than groupthink. As Thoreau writes:

The greater part of what my neighbors call good I believe in my soul to be bad, and if I repent of anything, it is very likely to be my good behavior. What demon possessed me that I behaved so well?

HC, there is nothing "simple-minded" about what I wrote. My statements are consistent with the vast majority of Christian faiths. If you think Christianity "simple-minded," so be it, but don't blame me for the limitations of its outlook.

I made no reference to the preacher in question. My statements were largely theoretical. Please carefully observe the content of a post prior to defaming it. Moreover, I must profess that I oppose book-burning of any sort and am an ardent proponent of freedom of press.

Here's a simple truth: The gay lifestyle is not compatible with Christian principles. I'm not stating that homosexuals are immoral or defective. I'm just baffled that they would even want to be part of a Christian church. A fish wouldn't want to live in sand.

If I were gay, I'd stay as far away from Christianity as possible. Acceptance of religion means total adherence. You either strive to live by it or you don't. If Christianity starts making exceptions for every deviation from its doctrines, nothing will be left of it but a mound of discarded scrolls. Religion is a members-only club, and that club has restrictions. If you desire a lifestyle without limits, you're better off at Lee Harvey's.

Tipped off by pet parrot, Dallas homeowner shoots burglar in the act

but there are some real nut-cases out there- more than there used be.

These are dark, uncertain times, and people are confused and afraid. The family unit has dissipated, and our sense of community has waned. Isolation of spirit breeds misanthropy, a condition that produces self-righteous madness. It's only natural that manifold loons are among us. This is why our solidarity as a species is imperative.

*I've been robbed and I've also been taken hostage by someone with intent to kill me*

Gilliand, I don't know whether to be horror stricken or charmed by your stark honesty, if, in fact, you write with veracity. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and remain in awe of your epic experiences. You really must compose an autobiography, the groundwork of which you have dilineated in these blogs.

I agree with Gilliand that the media's treatment of the fellow in question is grossly unacceptable. I concur also that the media's approach would have been drastically different had the gunslinger been a minority female assailed by a white male. Based upon the extant evidence, this chap had every right to pull the trigger.

Dallas police to implement first-time offender ticketing policy on loud car stereos

Gilliand, you reinforce my innate distrust of humanitarians.

Glen has made the best point in this blog:

*These sociopaths have, for too long, made things miserable for residents of Dallas who just want to go through the day in peace and relative sanity. I don't care what kind of music it is; I listen to music, but I don't inflict it on other people who may not want to hear it. It's a matter of simple consideration.*

This criterion should apply to individuals and businesses alike, both on the highway and, yes, Gilliand, in mixed-use areas. In time, perhaps after countless lawsuits, Dallas will reform.

Gilliand, your attack is completely unwarranted. I never stated that solitude is impossible to find in a city. I have been an urban dweller throughout my life and have always achieved relative silence. And please cease to spout nonsense about how noise is the problem of the victim burdened by it. Why not trace the virus to its origin and sanction those who impose inconsiderate behavior upon others?

The City of Dallas is beginning to awaken to the shortcomings of its restrictions on disruptive activity. Dallas is atrociously lax compared to most cities. This is changing, as well it should.

By the way, Gilliand, if an outdoor music venue were erected at the doorstep of your bucolic haven, do you think you'd be able to apply the argument that you were there first to escape the impending invasion? Of course not, because who was their first is of no import. Dallas needs to ensure that residents and businesses can coexist without conflict. This means that businesses must be self-contained entities, regardless of where they operate or how long they've been in existence. If you don't comprehend that, Gilliand, I fail to envision how you gather the intelligence to use a computer.

*There's nothing more irritating than this. With your windows up, and your own music playing, you still are forced to listen to the bass-booming car in traffic next to you.*

Mr. Yost, there is, in fact, something more irritating: an outdoor music venue whose amplifiers are aimed at a residential area. But I shan't prattle about that at present. My views on the issue are thoroughly documented.

Some urban sounds are unavoidable (e.g., planes, trains, buses, construction, and so on), but loud bass emanating from a car is pure noise pollution. Individuals responsible for such behavior should be ticketed. It's a nuisance to most observers, and there's no excuse for it. Confine your poor taste to your own vehicle.

You fools who support the right to make as much noise as possible are a pack of provincials. It's ironic that you encourage people who want quietude to move to the country, because that's precisely where you should be living. Dallas is a joke. A mature city such as NYC would never tolerate the behavior you cherish.

At ease, Mr. Brewer. I write in jest. I hope everyone here realizes that. Why is it that every Pegasus News blog I participate in strays miles from the topic at hand? Do I have a distracting effect, or am I really so pervasively loathed that I've become a sponge of universal scorn?

Brewer, you are no arbiter of expression. Should I long for writing guidance, I'll consult the Chicago Manual of Style or, my favorite, Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. Besides, when you label my prose "stilted," you simply confirm my commitment to literary tradition. I do, however, respect you for citing The Origin and History of the English Language. You seem to have a liberal-arts foundation, and we are brethren in that regard.

Gilliand, your mastery of disgraceful metaphor leaves me wallowing in inferiority. Your brilliance is inimitable. How I lament the defects of my intellect in the presence of a true sage. Tutor me, for I am your charge.

Yost, I trust your are categorizing me as either a masculine woman or an effeminate man. I assure you I am neither. As for "gender-confusion," is that not what you encountered upon shaving your legs this morning?

Mr. Brewer, while your didactism may carry some merit in the most limited sense ponderable, "Anglican" does not refer exclusively to the Church of England but also to the people of England and their culture. Thus, my reference to the "Anglican tongue" is perfectly applicable.

I am not recommending that we revive the language of the Angles, Saxons, or Jutes, but this brings up an interesting point. Why are the Jutes excluded from the term "Anglo-Saxon"? The Jutes arrived in England before the Angles or the Saxons, and "Anglo-Saxon" refers to people of Jute origin as well. The exclusion of "Jute" is curious.

On the contrary, rkiosk, my statements are consistent with those of Theodore Roosevelt. Surely you wouldn't compare him to a deranged dictator. There's nothing hateful about cultural preservation. Language and culture are inseparable. If one is lost, so is the other. I'm not demanding that anyone be of Anglican lineage. That's not a prerequisite for speaking English.

It's pathetic how people attempt to discredit views by sugessting that racist motives are at work. That's a very convenient way to dodge substantive discussion. Such ruses are employed only by cowards.

DrColes is among the few voices of reason I have encountered in Pegasus News blogs. Chanting "We are America" in Spanish is absurd. One nation, one language! Make use of the Anglican tongue or kindly retreat to your third-world pit.

UD's School of Ministry panel discussion to offer theological perspective on immigration

While the Catholic Church looks upon contraception with disdain, it does not endorse random propagation. One can restrict the number of offspring one creates without the artificial assistance of contraceptives. The Church should not be blamed for the excesses of the ignorant.

Introducing multiple children to a setting of abject poverty is unspeakably stupid. People who bring families of twelve to America in search of a better life don't realize that they are demeaning the conditions of our country in the process. They are simply transplanting the problems they faced in Mexico. Of course, Vicente Fox loves this paradigm, and why wouldn't he? I, too, would be charmed to rid my nation of such fools.
