"Gay Jesus" play canceled because jobs were threatened, says Tarleton State student
Actually, productions as this needn't fully manifest in order to deliver their desired outcome. It succeeded in that the next controversy will have to be set a bit higher, or it won't draw as much attention. That's what art does -- it tests limits and expands our collective maturity.

This is a great yearly event in Grapevine that I always enjoy. My only complaint is that with all games being free to play, the best games are so often hoarded by "that guy" (you know the type), who will proceed to keep pressing the Play Button over and over, without allowing others to enjoy their turn.

Just got back from the last day of the show. Chevy and Toyota had a test drive tent nearby, so it was possible for enthusiasts to drive the new Super Sport Camaro -- and it was a thing for which dream are made.

Sexy cucumber billboard upsets Dallas-area residents
Why did the complainant have to be "on her way to church"? She couldn't have just been driving around on a shopping day or on her way to drop her kids off at school. Nope. She had to be on her way to church, which made the serving suggestion all the more objectionable, you see?

Kinky Friedman drops out of race for Texas governor
Yeah, I know that you're right-on with that; I guess we're political weirdos for liking him so much. Ha!
Thanks, Travis, for giving me hope for our collective, political future. I do wish that Rick "Special Session" Perry would step down for another Republican candidate. Otherwise, I see a rip-and-tear battle within the right-wing that might put Mr. White into office. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but I'm so disillusioned with politics right now that the candidates are going to have to do some fancy two-stepping to get me to the polls -- I doubt that they'll impress.

I suppose that if having a genuine sense of humor within an election is frowned upon in Texas politics, then perhaps Kinky would be better suited for another state, where it's acceptable to call the opposition a bunch of "girlie men" only to follow criticism of such by shouting it over and over again via televised speeches until it becomes stale and satirical.

I completely agree, Travis. Perhaps through his service in a lesser public office, he'll eventually be taken seriously by media news, who have thus far refused him any such respect. I would challenge their passive presumptions of Kinky's campaign as being less than sincere. What, after all, makes celebrity Governors in California any more qualified than Kinky Friedman?

Content partner Richardson Echo starting online section to document Richardson history
I would like to see some photos of the Sun Rexal on Beltline at Central Expressway. In fact, the whole shopping center, during its heyday in the 60's, 70's and 80's, would be a very worthy documentation. In the spirit of such a historical undertaking, the Echo's efforts are appreciated.

Fish on Fire shuts down, seafood restaurant on Belt Line in Dallas says bye
When I dined there with a group of friends who lauded its reputation, we were disappointed that the management had decided to serve their usual bar food in the absence of live entertainment. In the manager’s professed aspiration to convert the ambiance toward a more family-oriented environment, he inadvertently turned it into an empty restaurant -- and perhaps that amounted to the other 50% of the equation for (location + bad luck).

The last time that I dined at this venue it was obvious that it was slated for demise. The management seemed sincere in their service and conscientiousness, but the venue as a whole failed to earnestly connect with its customers with 'that special something'.

How long do you suppose that it will take for Palin to have her very own, syndicated, AM Talk Radio show?

Experience the Amazon without those pesky mosquitoes
This is an excellently written article that is culturally inspiring. I plan on visiting the exhibit. It sounds as though Lovell has made excellent use of her carbon footprint. Have we become so critical in our cutlure that we can no longer admire those who have made their dreams a priority?

Eight-track exhibit at Barry Whistler Gallery in Deep Ellum plays well with music lovers
An 8-track enthusiast that I met online some years ago built a “CD to 8-Track” converter kit, so that I could listen to compact disks in my vintage Camaro. It utilized an 8-track cassette with a cable that plugged into a personal CD player. Once inserted into the 8-Track player, one would simply play the CD through the personal CD Player connected to the device through the earphone jack. It worked pretty well, actually.

Bucks Burnett to exhibit eight-track tape collection at Barry Whistler October 29-31
I had an 8-Track player in my 1980 Camaro, complete with the original 8-Track GM Sampler that came with the car when it was first sold. I'm sure that the kid I sold the car to ripped it out and put in some new CD/MP3 Stereo with a redundant remote control. :-)

Photo story: Radar-powered speed checkers raid the streets of Dallas
Hi, luniz. I realize the important psychological benefit for these mechanical devices as a reminder to slow down in speed-prone areas of town, but in Cockrell Hill, a police cruiser is never far from where they're posted. I think they may only be an effective deterrent in the absence of a citation, whereby "Oh, I need to slow down" quickly turns to "@#$%, I've been busted".
My comments above are more in response to nina_chawla's post on a speed trap in Highland Park than in condemnation of the devices in this story lead.

Kholmes, if speed traps were exclusive to recessionary times, I might indeed buy that argument. Perhaps smaller towns should look into investing in rental properties as a means of sustainable revenue; it has never rested well on my business sense that municipalities would rely on ticket scams as a means of civic preservation.

Oh. Don't get me wrong. 'Speeding' is dangerous! I just don't buy the "you were going 32mph down a steep slope of road in a 30mph zone, so here's a ticket" line as legitimate law enforcement in a depressed area trying to rejuvenate. It's bad for local businesses because it scares commerce away.

Small town police departments serve as a glimpse into how petty our government law enforcement agencies would soon become absent of an active crime rate. Rather ironic, isn't it?

There are a couple of these on West Jefferson in Cockrell Hill, near their new school building. And believe me! You 'want' to go a little under the radar-enforced speed limit there.
