Annual Crescent Spring Celebration 2008 coming to Rosewood Crescent Hotel on April 17
Oprah was petitioned to do the show by a group called Main Line. http://www.mlar.org/advocacy/puppy-mills
Lots of great info on that site, and here as well: http://www.network.bestfriends.org/tr...
I especially love this PDF that defines a puppy mill/backyard breeder, which by the way, is where these charity puppies come from. No reputable breeder (and they do exist!!) would let a dog of theirs be auctioned off to the highest bidder. http://www.network.bestfriends.org/Li...
I am rolling my eyes at Oprah's newfound sympathy as well BUT I ultimately hope this will be a good thing. I did see an article today that said "Oprah adopted her current dogs from breeders" (emphasis mine). News flash, Oprah, you buy dogs from breeders, not adopt them.
By the way I'm not affiliated with any of these groups - just a hard working animal rescuer myself, specializing in dachshunds. :)

The Best of the Breed
Cool, I did not know that Forney Road (not Street) was still open. I thought all adoptions, etc., were going through Westmoreland. (http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/TX2...) Next time I am at the new shelter I'll ask about Forney. I volunteered there last summer working with the dogs on obedience, etc., and there were SO many wonderful ones there. It broke my heart to go back week after week and see the same ones in the adoption program. The shelter gets hardly any traffic, or at least it did when I was there. It's sad, really. I wish Dallas would do more in the way of offering low-cost spay/neuter and preventive care, and promoting adoption, than these dumb proposed new laws on pet limits and such.

Auctioning puppies is so, so wrong. The HSUS has spoken out against it; info here: http://www.hsus.org/pets/issues_affec...

Good list of shelters but both the Dallas shelters closed and now there is the new one at 1818 Westmoreland.

Why not write about rescue groups too? They save the animals who are too sick or otherwise not right for the adoption programs at these shelters, rehab them, and find them forever homes.

UPDATED: Cedars district resident isn't fond of the noise at Lee Harvey's
Hate to keep this going but yeah, this person has never been to Lee's and I have to defend it. There is no outdoor plumbing (?), no one ever pays to enter as it's a bar, not some dumb club, and many many improvements have been made including adding the outdoor bar and more covered seating. I agree with the other comment that Lee Harvey's is a cool, fun place in a city that doesn't appreciate that. It is my favorite place in Dallas and it breaks my heart that they took away the fire pits. I loved going in the winter and buying a Smores kit and cooking my marshmallows over the fires. Yum! If you haven't tried the onion rings, do so ASAP. And who can forget Bacon, the best bar cat ever. Long live Lee Harvey's and its laid-back, non-obnoxious crowd. If you want to see people stumbling away drunk and peeing on things try going to McKinney Ave and I'm sure you will find all the frat boys doing it there!

The Claxon as allegory for newspapers
"Remember: every time you click on the internet, a professional journalist cries."
Classic! And every time you fail to capitalize Internet, a professional copy editor winces. (Not you, P-News. Just sayin'!)

There's a 'hipster haunt' in Bishop Arts? Dammit. I was hoping those people wouldn't find Oak Cliff for a while.
