    My new favorite professional bio

Check out Kevin's "Awards" listed on his firm's webpage:

    • 5280 and Colorado Super Lawyer magazines Colorado Super Lawyer (2006)
    • Oakwood Elementary School "Boy of the Year"

Compare to the typical boring lawyer mumbo jumbo legal-speak in the following: http://www.cadwalader.com/view_attorn...

Perhaps that is why I was never St. Mark's "Boy of the Year."

    Trivia smackdown Tuesday night

I think that "Hello, I Love You" was a number 1 song. "L.A. Woman" and "Riders on the Storm" were big hits too. I go with those three plus "Light My Fire."

    Trivia smackdown Tuesday night

I guess that question depends on which Simon and Garfunkel split the question has in mind, since there have been multiple:

    • Girl from Ipanema (mid 60's)
    • Simon & Garfunkel split (late 60's)
    • AC/DC get together (early 70's - '73 I think)
    • Born in the USA tour (mid 80's - album was '84)

"Stop the Darfur Genocide Act" passes the Texas House unanimously

Real economic pressure on companies doing business with governments that perpetrate genocide undoubtedly has an impact. One of the best ways to exert such pressure on these companies is to amass significant ownership stakes in them and as owners force changes in management and company policy.

Market divestiture of ownership interests may likely have the opposite effect. Flooding the market with supply of a company’s stock may have a short term effect on the aggregate value of a company, but short term spikes in the volume of trades from ERS and TRS’ divestures should not destabilize or devalue a company’s value in the long.

Rather, divestiture of ERS and TRS’ ownership interests in these companies will guarantee that ERS and TRS no longer have a direct say as owners in the way such companies do business. Instead, third party parties who purchase the ownership interests from ERS and TRS for approximately $426,000,000 will have the say as owners in the way such companies are run. Unfortunately, few organizations are willing to invest $426,000,000 for humanitarian purposes, so I doubt the new owners will be compelled to change the profitable practices of these companies because genocide is wrong.

Also, the divestiture of ownership interests in these companies are secondary market transactions. The companies themselves will not directly gain or lose any access to revenues or funds as a result.

Unless I am misunderstanding how the proposed legislation works (which is very possible and why I asked the initial question) the effect of the law would wipe the ERS and TRS’ hands clean of any contact with the Darfur genocide, i.e., “our money is no longer involved in the genocide that we know is happening and that we know will continue.” That is not a bold stance at all, or rather it is exactly the type of semantic stance against genocide that Erin rightly bedamns.

    Thoughts?

It is a bold statement to come out against genocide~

Any idea how the divestiture, or threat thereof, will have the stated financial impact on the Sudanese government?

And they say we need copy editors...

According to the Muppets Biography Form for Fozzie Bear, imbedded deep inside of the official Muppets website (http://muppets.go.com/main.html), Mike used the correct spelling of "Wocka."

    A promise to our readers

Uh, English is the most important language for national, political, and commercial communication in India (see https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/...). Almost all educated Indians are fluent in English, and almost all employees of Indian call centers are educated (see http://www.amazon.com/World-Flat-Upda...). I think you are just having trouble with the accents.

I suggest putting your call center in Farmers Branch to ensure that all of the employees speak 'merican.

Paula Abdul's drunken Fox 4 interview

Give the woman a break. She suffers from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (aka Complex Regional Pain syndrome), a rare neurological disorder that causes severe back pain. Some of the meds Paula takes can make her a bit loopy, but she swears that she is not addicted to drugs.

TXU using sound bites to defend pollution

Back in May of this year, Andrew Sullivan posted a link to the Competitive Enterprise Institute's p.r. campaign in defense of carbon dioxiode. The campaign is hysterical. As Sullivan points out, the money quote is: "Carbon Dioxide: They call it 'pollution.' We call it 'life.'"

    Ben Kweller's first show

My parents took me to my first real concert too: Raffi – 1981 – down by the bay where the watermelons grow. I was three, munching on some ooples and banoonoos, and baby beluga was swimming in the deep blue sea.

Ben Cohen, Alan Cohen, something phish-foody is up. Just because uncle Ben believes ice cream should be provided to each according to his need, doesn't mean you have to take up the family cause.

    Turn The Volume Up!

From the Village Vanguard information page:

"We do not serve food. We haven't served food here in 25 years. So if someone offers you a hamburger, check the expiration date.

All ages are welcome, including quiet children...

During performances, QUIET IS ENFORCED. We're a jazz club, not a chat room."

Perhaps the aniseed infused namesake should take a lesson from one of the greats.

Bill Nguyen is a bright, successful guy. He sold his first company a year after starting it for $850M. He started his second company the day after he sold his first, raised $55 million in financing, was set for an IPO in 2004 before pulling its offering. Now Nguyen is at it again, with Bain Capital backing him. Bain’s consulting roots causes them to scrutinize business models relentlessly. Nguyen is bringing the special sauce to this space and my hunch is that he’s banking on the power of the long tail: http://blog.pegasusnews.com/2004/10/s...

    Superbowl Censorship

The Stones’ have a long history of acquiescence to mother [offesnive gerund removed] network censors. It dates back at least to 1967 when that [inappropriate reference to fecal digestion removed] Ed Sullivan requested that the band change the lyrics of “Let's Spend the Night Together”. In the live, televised performance Mick produced some [insulting and possibly discriminatory reference to chromosomal deficiency removed] mumbling that sounded like, "Let's spend some time together." It's nice to see that television censors sense of decency has progressed with the times [though its sarcasm is to be frowned upon, “we” find nothing patently offensive about the preceding sentence]. Yesteryear’s nocturnal cuddling is this year’s necrophilia. At least the internet is still [reference to sexual activity, or lack thereof, removed] territory for corporate censors.
