Theater Review: The Music Man
You know, Carol, I think your review was spot on. I think Music Man is a great show, but could be so much better if the people that usually produce it understood it better. I must confess I never really "got" it until I saw composer Meredith Willson as a panelist on GSN reruns of the old panel show "The Name's the Same". He was very, very dry, and of course the show is his autobiography. Watching him, I suddenly understood that dry humor is the key. If you try to force it, as you said the pick-a-little ladies did, it just falls flat. The pure joy of a scene such as "One Grecian Urn" is that the ladies involved are so serious!!!

Theater Review: Gaslight
Mark-Brian, you nailed it. This marvelous play never dates. I saw a HIGH SCHOOL production back in the 80's and it still worked. And you are absolutely correct when discussing its influence on countless plays and movies ever since. And what about those little beads???

Can't wait for your review, Michael Schaefer. I'm very sorry my wife and I had to miss the festivities last night. Hopefully, I'll be back in the swing of things soon.

Catherine, they also feature great live bands. My brother-in-laws oldies band The Fuzztones plays there from time to time. It's a great venue, with lots of people from the neighborhood dropping by. And, yes, the food is excellent, especially the burgers.

North Texas Irish Festival
Guys, whatever you do, don't miss the Whiskey Tasting. Tullamore, Bushmills, Michael Collins, and a lovely Irish Cream that is better than Baileys. $2 a taste, and have your ID ready. Yes, they check!

Equal-opportunity offenders
Soapbox briefly, guys? Thanks. VOTE!!!! You don't have to vote in the primary but please vote in November. I know, I know. "Don't vote, it only encourages them." But really, as far as I'm concerned, if you don't vote in November, I don't want to have to listen to you complain for the next four years. "But, my vote doesn't matter." It matters to YOU. When you vote, this is your vision of where you want this country to be headed in the future. Off soapbox now. Thanks again.

Drew Hendricks of Charlie Palmer Dallas passes test to become master sommelier
Worzel_Gummidge, I'm sorry I've been floating out there for the last few days, but I'm ready to take your version of the 2008 Master Sommelier exam. Here Goes Nothing:
1.Cab comsumption patterns in Texas: Answer: C: Buy it, drink it, drink it, drink it, drink it, smash!!! (sound of bottle thrown into fireplace). BTW, here in Texas, Cab is most usually bought in the magnum or box units:
% of French Oak used in T-Bird: Answer: Why don't you ask Kim Wilson, lead singer and harpist extraordinaire of the Fabulous Thunderbirds? (A great band, especially live!),
What will relax the Hooters sommelier the quickest? Answer: D. A Dallas Cowboy's Super Bowl Ring!
Essay Question: Personification of Rachel Ray as Two Buck Chuck at a Case Discount. Briefly I thought of taking the Semiotic Phenomonological Perspective in the strictly Pluralist sense, mind you, but decided all attempts at partial sanity were beyond the pale, as I spotted once again the cover of the most recent D Magazine, and instead decided to respond thus: If Rachel Ray is Discounted Two-Buck Chuck, then Casey Thompson is First Growth Bordeaux!!! Yes, No??????

Nolan Ryan named new Texas Rangers president
Lastangelman: I like the way you think, but I would just be happy if he could help the perpetually wobegone Rangers. Guys: Don't be so quick to write him off just yet. The wild card in all of this is John Daniels, who at least has the club moving sort of in the right direction by insisting on building (mostly) from within, a philosophy which helped build our noble Dallas Cowboys into America's Team. It says here that they hired a living, genuine, breathing Baseball Man rather than just another good businessman, and any positive input would be welcome and long overdue. Finally, let me just say that the fans have proven time and again that yes, they will support the Rangers quite well thank you if you concentrate more of your attention on the product on the field rather than just the marketing concept du jour.

Blue Canyon Kitchen, Tavern, and Wine Bar to open in Rockwall in January
Update: Guys, I went last night and the food was truly incredible, particularly the pretzel-crusted trout. My only suggestion is that he consider adding some Texas wines to the mix. Plus, it says here, you can't beat the view. Parking at The Harbor can be an issue, please be advised.

UPDATED x 2: Historic Hard Rock Cafe building in Dallas gets the axe
What a great discussion, guys! Thanks! Tingthing: In my humble opinion, one of your postings contained the greatest wisdom, and I bet most people skirted right over it! Guys, please, do yourselves a favor and go back and read the Nothing is Permanent wisdom, which appears to be a Brave Combo song. More profound thought about this subject at hand than in all the other postings combined; again, in my opinion. In that spirit I say: I imagine the issue will sort itself out in time; it usually does.

Dang, you know, I might actually be able to afford this place once in a blue canyon moon, especially for lunch. Question: Does the "Grown up" Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup listed on the lunch menu at www.bluecanyonrestaurant.com come with your own Hooter's Girl on the side??? Just kidding, of course!!!

No, Scott, Preston and Forest isn't really a true pilgrimage for me; I was speaking metaphorically. Still, I'm relatively new to my 'hood and there are still so many high-quality restaurants nearby to check out that sometimes it takes a little extra push or incentive (like the Wright architecture) to make me drive just a little furthur out of my way. I bet at least a few of my fellow Pegasites sometimes feel like that as well.

Must make the pilgrimage south to see Woodlands, as my lovely wife the Rock Star and I are Frank Lloyd Wright fanatics. We have not yet seen Fallingwater, but we have seen Taliesin West and it is quite impressive. Kobe beef sliders should make a very nice lunch as well.

DMN Wine Competition attracts global interest
As a certified wine cruiser, however, I can attest to the validity of at least one statement: Medals from different competitions do tend to attract my attention when the chardonnay in question is winking at me from the store shelf.

I'm becoming a bit of a soupaholic. Soups are a great way to get a good, cheap lunch. Soup trio sounds like a great idea, depending on the portion size.

Dining out in Dallas: Best restaurant reviews of 2007
With all due respect to all the fine restaurants in this area, my number one meal of 2007 has to be the double-cut barbecued pork chop at Coopers in Llano, Texas, one of the sainted Central Texas Barbecue Meccas. Anyone else like to share info on their favorite meal all year???

"Smaller portions" tops T.G.I. Friday's food resolution survey
Not surprising. Portions at many American restaurants can feed a small army. There is, however, one good use for large portions: They make for great lunches the next day, and the next, and the next......

Mooyah's quality is quite good. So what if they are somewhat reminiscient of In-N-Out? As of this writing, there are no In-N-Out locations east of Arizona. I say get good burgers where you can find them!
