Concert review: Ben Folds and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerson (September 30)
I loved "Cologne" last night - and his story about taking too many painkillers then writing it. Have to admit I still like Ben better sans orchestra. Still, a great show!

Texas' conquest of the world continues unabated
Wow. I had to make do with Guilford Golden Ale last year. You have to love a ballpark where you can order burritos at "Cornwallis' Last Stand." Go Hoppers!

Cool or lame?
My kids still haven't recovered from getting the bejesus scared out of them on the Jurassic Park ride at Islands of Adventure two years ago so we'll likely pass on this. As for wasn't this already at the AAC earlier this summer - you may be thinking of the last Eagles tour.

Farewell to one of my early news influences
Not only was Doug Marlette was amazingly multi-talented, but he had two qualities I dearly admired - he always made time to help out young people and he wasn't afraid of pissing off the powers than be. He will definitely be missed.

McKinney creates new cheerleading overseer position
Will the offcial job title be cheerleading czar or perhaps pom pom priestess?

La Hacienda Ranch parking lot in Colleyville great place to get your car broken into
My wallet was stolen last month in the bar at Uncle Julio's in Grapevine. Someone reached in my purse and pulled it out while I was standing at the very crowded bar. Within an hour, the crooks had charged more than $4,000 at Lowe's and Best Buy. I'm thinking they loaded up on lumber and a flat screen TV!

The best comment we have ever had
I didn't get the photo used with this story. It looks like a child with Down Syndrome playing which is no relation to this story. I guess the link is that the child is "spinning" around, but I don't think it works. You might as well run a shot of a woman doing a "spinning" class. Can you get a photo of the school or run the distrct logo?

Truly, a great profession
As bad as these numbers are for journalists, I think they are even higher for other professions like lawyers, lobbyists and, of course, televangelists.

DMN critics are O-L-D
I'm also O-L-D! I remember when this point was brought up six years ago by the Dallas Observer! I loved the bit in this story about Thor losing it to the Beastie Boys' doing "Sabotage."
http://www.dallasobserver.com/2002-06...
Here's another link with a real photo and Thor's musings on the DFW music scene including this line: "Unfortunately a lot of what is coming out of Dallas are mediocre pop singers like Kelly Clarkson, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson and Lee Ann Rimes."

Blades of Glory
Give Jon Heder and Will Farrell a perfect 6.0 for this triple sowcow over the top send-up of competitive ice skating. The gags are both in-your-face (who doesn't laugh when the Olympic mascot catches fire in the preview!) and subtle, making fun of everything from corporate sponsorships, the nationals are held in PlayStation360 Arena, to kiddie ice shows - I loved Rob Corddry's turn as the bitter manager of The Gibblets. Directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon, creators of the Geico Caveman commercials, keep the schichts coming so fast that I sometimes longed for a DVD pause feature. "Blades of Glory" isn't high-brow fare, but after I suffered through "Norbit," it seemed Oscar worthy!

You might also try consignment shops for cheap furniture finds, particularly ones run by non-profits such as Goodwill and GRACE in Grapevine.

Applebee's in Colleyville and Fort Worth to close
I'm blaming this on those two guys who co-opted the Gilligan's Island theme song to sell shrimp dishes. I'm forever reaching for the mute button during the NCAA tournament. At least the head honchos are shopping for a new ad firm. http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity...

Norbit
I didn’t want to go to this movie, but was forced into it when…
We went to San Antonio over Spring break.
It rained every day we were there.
Fiesta Texas was mobbed even though the new Tony Hawk roller coaster was closed due to lightening so my three sons voted to blow off our planned day there.
So on a rainy Tuesday we ended up in line at an Austin Highway multiplex with the following choices:
300 – “Too violent,” I told them.
Bridge to Terabithia – “Too girly,” the boys said.
Words and Music – “Yeah, right mom!!” they groaned.
So we were left with “Norbit.” Now I know some moms would have properly packed the kids back in the minivan, but I was - I repeat - desperate! So $32 in tickets and close to $50 in popcorn, soda and candy, in we went.
It was bad. I knew the Eddie Murphy flick had been universally labeled “mean-spirited” by every respectable critic and been generally blamed for his Best Supporting Oscar loss to Alan Arkin. Still, I was ever hopeful.
But in the first 10 minutes, the movie managed to insult: black people in general and black babies in particular, Asian Americans, women, the handicapped, overweight people and Italian-Americans.
The saddest thing is that my three sons – ages 8 to 14 – loved it. They though the fat jokes (like when Murphy’s Rasputia repeatedly hits the car horn anytime she gets in the driver’s seat) were hilarious.
The crude humor, titillating sexual innuendo and general bigotry of this film were disgusting. The tagline for the film’s promo poster is “Have you ever made a big mistake?”
Yeah, taking my kids to see this crap!

Nana's Kountry Kitchen in Grapevine is proud of its chicken-fried steak
