Plano can now sell liquor
Alcoholic beverages are a cancer on society. We would be much better off if we did away with such foolishness. Every year, alcohol is a contributing factor in 40,000 lethal accidents, including automotive accidents. Additionally, alcohol is associated with increased risk of several types of cancer. Furthermore, alcohol damages the brain, impairs judgement and lowers inhibition. It is associated with a major part of domestic violence. In other words, this is blood money.
I doubt the glowing promises made by the pro-liquor side will pan out as they promised. We aren't likely to find out easily, because that kind of information rarely is followed and reported.

Liquor may be sold in Plano if referendum passes
We need organized opposition. Increasing ease of access means increasing consumption. Accidents and domestic violence rise with increased alcohol consumption.

Officials say "driver inattention" caused the death of 64-year-old cyclist
I ride my bicycle often, but I really hate that I have to ride on streets with motor vehicles. It's bad enough that I have to drive on roads with these other drivers when I'm surrounded by a metal cage; 40k+ a year die in motor vehicle accidents, most of which I believe are due to poor driving behaviors. A bicycle against a car or truck isn't much of a contest.

Plano residents in uproar over new Condom Sense store
They are the people who have to live with this store in their neighborhood. I think they should have some say in what goes in there.

Plano farmers market officially in the works
I asked Plano's Health Department 3 years ago what I would need to do to sell produce from my back yard. The answer was, go somewhere else. Only food grown in agricultural zones was allowed to be sold in Plano City limits, because that is the only zone that gets inspected for food safety. Have the recent changes changed those rules? Would I be able, in theory, to sell food I grow in my back yard in East Plano?

Plano native Lance Armstrong to be stripped of 7 Tour de France titles
I don't normally follow sports of any type, but I do listen to news reports regularly. I was relieved 6 or 7 years ago, when I heard that all charges against Armstrong had been dropped. I was sick of hearing about it back then. If prosecutors haven't been able to prosecute Armstrong successfully in the last decade, I cannot understand what rational reason they could even imagine they have to continue.
I can't blame Armstrong a bit for refusing to continue addressing these charges. It is obvious that the USADA has no intention of accepting Armstrong's innocence.

111-year-old Plano Victorian home now on the market
I've admired that house many times. It is a beautiful house, and so close to downtown Plano.

UPDATED: 32-year-old dad from Plano found in Michigan
A big difference between the woman who disappeared last month and this man is the woman was only going to her back yard with a headache and not feeling well, but this man apparently felt healthy and was going for a walk. Something was obviously wrong in the case of the woman. It isn't obvious that the man in this case had anything happen to him.

UPDATED: 32-year-old dad from Plano found in Michigan
Jason Rice, I did spend a few hours on Thursday and Friday riding my bike around the area, looking for him.
katiep477, I don't know the reason, and I've wondered the same. Some detail must be different, and we might not know what it is. One difference is that the missing woman had complained of headache, whereas this man apparently was feeling healthy when he disappeared.
It would be easier to search if I had some coordination with other searchers. I don't know what has been covered and what hasn't. I've looked around much of the area of Sherrye Drive, from the railroad tracks on the other side of 14th Street over to Bob Woodruff Park. I looked in several parts of the creeks and canals and empty fields in the area.

Is this similar to the case a month or so ago, in which a woman disappeared after saying she was going into her back yard? Would a search party be appropriate? This is close to where I live; I could hop on my bike and ride around the neighborhood, though I can't imagine I'd find anything 2 days after the fact.

Sweet Firefly in Richardson brings joy and superb ice cream
What a wonderful concept!
I am wondering what ice cream purity has to do with it melting back to liquid form. Doesn't most ice cream do that?

New downtown Plano development proposed
I live about 2 miles from downtown Plano, but sometimes even I forget where downtown is. I'm actually glad that we are so low key. My neighbors and myself like being left alone. "Rich and Fabulous" West Plano can keep all the HOAs and self-entitled nouveau upper middle classe. We who live in "Poor and Broke" East Plano like quiet and modest neighborhoods. I can (and do) ride my bicycle to and through downtown from my affordable home.
It's too bad about the skating rink. I never go to those places, but it's a nostalgic memory, like drive-in movie theaters.

Texas gun owners allowed to keep guns and ammo in vehicles at jobs
The main negative concern I have regarding this law is that cars are often broken into and the contents stolen. When I worked in an office by I-635 in Dallas, I learned of new break-ins in our parking garage almost every day. One of my co-workers even caught a man smashing car windows, and chased the man, my co-worker in his car and the man on foot. Leaving a gun in the car seems an easy way to arm criminals. I don't see that convenience for someone's hobby trumps that concern.
Generally, I'm pro-gun ownership. I would like to see that people's guns are safely stored and kept from criminals.

Queen of Hearts magic costume shop in downtown Plano to close December 31
I have often seen Queen of Hearts since I moved to Plano, but I've never stopped in. It looks like a fun shop. The only other magic shop in the area that I knew about was in Frisco, off Stonebrook Parkway, but it closed quite some time ago. There are other costume shops in the area.

Live Green Expo in Plano draws speaker Joel Salatin, record crowd
One of the first things that I did after I bought my new house in Plano last year was plant a garden. I would like to be able to sell my excess produce, but I'm not sure the City is going to allow me. I did pick up some ideas and suggestions from some of the vendors at the Live Green Expo, which I hope to follow up Monday.

Man arrested in alleged bombing attempt at Fountain Place in downtown Dallas
The reports I read (a half-dozen through Google News) say that the suspect stated that he came to this country (illegally) specifically to wage violent jihad against the U.S. He came to the attention of the FBI after making frequent statements of his desire. So, this doesn't look like a case of entrapment; the guy looks like he intended to do this from the start. I'm glad they caught him.

Photo gallery: Hot air balloons attack East Plano
Thanks, Alex.
Yes, this is SOP, not only in Plano, but in every community I've ever visited that hosts balloon festivals. The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, held in October, is much larger than Plano's, and those balloons can come down anywhere! A few crazy people even fly their balloons over the mile-high mountain next to Albuquerque (and a few live through it!).

I saw the balloons, too. I followed several of them as they landed, from landings on 14th Street, down as far as Summit Avenue.
Here is a link to some of my photos:

Eastern extension of George Bush Turnpike now fully under construction
I'm wondering how much of the extension will cut through old growth forest and historic sites? I know the project was delayed for an excavation recently. I wonder what else is out there?
