    Club Clearview goes kaput

    1) His name's Doug Simmons, not Simpson.

    2) Beatcha to it, and with multimedia, no less. http://www.bigdlittled.com

This is your brain on the Observer

Hold up just a second. First off, this article was in the paper's Night & Day section, which targets a non-music audience and promotes general entertainment options around the metroplex. It's not a piece of music criticism, and furthermore, to that target audience, jokes about rednecks that contrast the content of the event might gasp entice those who actually think of country/bluegrass in such simple terms to rethink and attend.

Second off, and much more importantly, are you really taking something seriously that talks about "dusk-till-dawn farting contests"? If he'd attached that term to any generic music audience (particularly the Poor David's Pub crowd, in my opinion), that would still be funny. Geoff is one of the few solid local music writers left there, anyway, so be careful what you wish for.

You should probably credit the Observer for posting this (check the username on the uploaded video). Thanks -SM

    More 'bout Last Night

Congrats on the win. But Cindy, even if other people have begun helping you lately, this is YOUR site. Why didn't you step up and give an acceptance speech?

"Should people stay home during high school football games because they might see some subpar play?"

Bad analogy. High school football is good because of its rough edges and imperfections... the sports equivalent of a good night at Rubber Gloves. There's a difference between high school football and elementary school YMCA ball.

"Should all of those who are too casual a music fan...flog themselves with a cat-o-nine-tails...?"

    Yeah, probably.

What the hell ever. Bad festivals hurt local music, especially because of the impression they leave on casual music listeners who'd never hear the bands otherwise, and should not be encouraged.

    This Week in QuickDFW

Aw, Cindy. Here you go giving Hudson all this love when I actually went to the trouble of interviewing Mr. Pedigo about the whole affair: http://www.dallasobserver.com/Issues/...

The ballot's not up as of right now cuz one of our corporate web dudes went on vacation, so another fella had to design it from scratch... he'll be done with it by the end of today.

But, you know, this is the Internet, where waiting even 10 minutes is just too damn long...so I'll direct you kind folks to the Denton Rock City post where I leaked the info yesterday (and then everyone else talked about puking and butter-cage wrasslin):

Vote in the Dallas Mavericks Playoff Song Contest

The Dallas Observer is boycotting this contest as a protest that Dirk Nowitzki was found ineligible to contribute his own song to his own team's playoff run. We believe Dirk's employment with the Mavs is totally inconsequential and irrelevant; what's more, we will be voicing loud complaints for the next few months. In all caps.

Sam Introduces Me to Kelly Hogan

Kelly will be in town w/ Neko Case in April; she says that she'll open the show with a semi-full band if Schoder/Granada doesn't book another opener in her stead. I'll call Mike in a few days to check on that.

And Bloodshot artists are often good, but their CDs are usually quite blah--never converting the live performances to plastic. A few exceptions, sure...but how many times have you ever dug out a Meat Purveyors CD to listen, really?

    D.O. Dish

Pfft. I was just giving Cindy crap for not digging through this week's section when I finally felt like I pulled off a good batch of local treats. But we can get in a fight if you wantsta. I've been playing a lot of Tekken 5 lately and am ready to pull off a down-down-left-circle-triangle combo at will.

So you guys have reported on the new Baboon record, the new Theater Fire record, the new Slowride record and those choads in Barefoot? Really? Or the freaking amazingness of the Lemurs? How about the V-Day lovefest from local musicians? That's all in TexasGigs, really?

    And it's "pique."

    We need some 3G Ipods

I use a P1 266 mhz laptop with 96 MB of RAM and a crappy factory-default sound card. It's old but serviceable.

Actually, the 4G will take all bitrates, as long as you use the LATEST builds of Podzilla (though those aren't entirely stable). But even if you get a 3G, the iPod's a messy solution to portable recording, only because the battery life can be suspect--recording drains the battery a lot more quickly than playing mp3s does because it forces constant access to the iPod HD. I'd recommend finding a cheap-ass laptop instead; you'll have so much more control over recording and having multiple instances open and it's not that hard to use. Why, even Cindy can do it. :)

    Radio Sunday!

This week, I'll be guest hosting on 90.1 at Night, if that sways anybody's choice on which of these shows to listen to. I'll be bringing my fave local albums of last year to help Paul with his Best of '05 episode.
