Barbecue Report: Odom's Bar-B-Que in Dallas

One of the main attractions of Odom's (and, for that matter, most barbecue joints in Southern Dallas) is the late hours, allowing you to pick up some ribs long after just about everything north of the Trinity has closed.

Nice to see the FCGBBQ crew on Pegasus!

Tei An in Dallas' One Arts Plaza to open rooftop patio, reports The Brad

Will there be food on the roof? If so, from a different menu than the main restaurant?

Eating on the cheap at Aurora in Dallas

Looks like a lot of value for the money. (Artichoke soup with black truffles at Guy Savoy: $68.)

    Dallas-based Wingstop expanding to Mexico

Great news! Now I'll have someplace to go next time I'm in Mexico and would rather forego the native offerings of one of the world's richest food cultures and get a dozen syrupy, soggy, heat-lamped, factory-farmed chicken wings!

UPDATED: Dallas restaurateur Bob Sambol, of Bob's Steak & Chop House, indicted for theft

You do know, amuse, that civil and criminal redress are not mutually exclusive? It's not at all unusual for the same acts to give rise to civil litigation and criminal prosecution. Your framing of this discussion as an either/or (i.e., civil/criminal) is mistaken.

There are also plenty of situations where one may incur civil liability, without committing a crime. You apparently think this is one of them. But why? Do you have information that isn't publicly available? Do you have all the information that the grand jury had? More than they had?

I can understand the desire to not leap to conclusions about someone's guilt on the basis of an indictment. But you've gone way beyond that, insisting not only that Sambol has not committed any crime, but that the DA is behaving corruptly and abusively. Again, what basis do you have for claiming that?

UPDATED: Dallas restaurateur Bob Sambol, of Bob's Steak & Chop House, indicted for theft

We'll see if Alex's read on the situation is justified by the facts, as they continue to emerge.

If Sambol spent Thompson's money on contractors, consultants, architects, etc., for the expansion, he should have no difficulty producing the documentation to show where the money went.

But what if the money is gone and Sambol can't show where it was spent? Or what if prosecutors can show that it was spent to retire personal debts or for some other purpose unrelated to the expansion?

If I give a stockbroker money to put in GM stock and I lose money on the stock, there's no crime. But if I give a stockbroker money to put in GM stock and he loses it all at the racetrack, that's not "capitalism"--it's a crime.

It's safe to say that the grand jurors had much more information than any of us do. Regardless of whether Sambol is ultimately convicted of anything, the very fact of indictment means that at least 9 ordinary citizens believed the evidence justified criminal charges.

That means they didn't think it was a mere lack of communication or misunderstanding. Maybe they were right, maybe they were wrong, but it seems odd to confidently second-guess the grand jurors without seeing the evidence on which they based that decision.

Second branch of Twisted Root now open in Richardson

The "made from scratch" line is overstatement. Most critically (for a gourmet burger joint), they don't make their own buns. (Their seasoned curly fries aren't from scratch, either.)

Still, they do more "from scratch" than most burger joints in Dallas, which is to be commended. If CK can pull himself away from the grinding stone and set his ax aside long enough to direct us to a gourmet burger place in Dallas that does more from scratch than Twisted Root, it would be appreciated.

Either Briefing is going gangbusters, or they're grasping at straws

I started getting it last fall. It was just what I wanted--daily litter to clear off my lawn. I went through the cumbersome process of "opting out" and it stopped after a week or so. They recently started showing up again, so I had to "opt out" in stronger terms.

Subscription newspapers aren't litter, since they're solicited by a resident. But is it legal for the DMN to abandon refuse on private property when the property owners *haven't* requested it? I'm guessing there are some municipal ordinances that would apply. Next time I find a soggy wad of DMN briefs on my lawn, I may have to research that.

ALDI discount supermarket chain to open 25 stores in Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2010

So the planned opening of the stores in 2009 (previously reported here: http://tinyurl.com/abo5n9 ) has been delayed. Too bad. They could probably really get some mileage out of their business model in these economic times.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram raises newsstand price to $1

Incredible Japanese "food porn" on Dallasfood.org

Very tough and not great on taste? The few times I've had it (in Europe; always cooked), it's been noteworthy for its tenderness. The avoidance of horse meat in the English-speaking west has nothing to do with its quality as a meat, but purely cultural hangups.

Fairmont Dallas has fancy chef's tasting room with price they won't reveal

It's great that a potential customer has absolutely no idea what price range to expect? I don't think so. That's just a bad marketing decision.

The ability to meet with a chef and sommelier and craft a custom menu is not unusual. Nearly every upscale restaurant in Dallas has one or more wine/tasting/special event rooms for that purpose. But if you called the manager of one of those restaurants, they would be able to give you a rough price range.

Since this is the only thread in all of Pegasus News that you've demonstrated any interest in, I'll leave this last comment and move on. You can respond with another affirmation of how great this idea is and then move on yourself, if you like.

Maximo Cocina Mexicana in North Dallas now open for lunch hours

Went back to El Rancho this morning and both of the molcajetes pictured above were still there. Housewares, Aisle 10, below the brooms and mops, along with the comals and tortilla presses, as one would expect.

The one on the right is no longer there, as I bought it for the price stated above: $13.59 (plus tax). Consider it my gift to you, w4p. I'll find some way of getting it to you.

And that wasn't my intent, as hopefully I've made clear. I like Maximo and will continue to go there from time to time. (Maybe you and I will bump into each other there without knowing it!) Though it's a tough time to be opening a restaurant, this is one I would like to succeed.
