Website looking for residents to rent out their homes during Super Bowl

i'm biased, but i prefer Airbnb. I've been wondering how many individuals will successfully rent their homes/extra bedrooms through these platforms for the superbowl. It'll be interesting to see it unfold.

Good god: In an effort to "keep Christmas everywhere," pastor Robert Jeffress of First Baptist is creating a "naughty" and "nice" list online of retail stores that honor Christmas.

oh goodness. religion aside, i always kind of assumed wishing someone 'happy holidays' encompassed the whole seasonal arc, and not just christmas. jesus is not the reason we eat half a processed-cheese-food ball and pretend the live new years eve broadcast from times square is fascinating.

Urban Crust in East Plano doing pizza with butternut squash on it

oh man, i just had the best stir-fried pumpkin and tofu dish at a thai place in san francisco last week, and it totally ignited my fall squash cravings...so i must seek out this pizza. too bad i no longer work in plano. it's so far from denton!

Sunday at Austin City Limits: Denton band Midlake (October 10)

yeah, i agree, john. i'm a dentonite and very proud of midlake--in fact, i'd say 75% of the reason i went to the big, free flaming lips show during nx35 this year was to hear midlake open. they were excellent. i don't know a lot about fleet foxes, but am i wrong in assuming they're not that much more established in the music scene than midlake?

but yeah, denton, austin, other hipster-leaning areas...the guys like their beards. but then, my dad has one, and my husband--neither of whom i'd describe as hipsters ('specially dad, who doesn't qualify as a backwoodsman either). so i'm not really sure beardedness should take up a whole paragraph (even though i just wrote one where it did). especially when there's so much more to say about the studiously-crafted harmonies and fine musicianship of this band.

midlake's members (particularly eric pulido) really get involved in the music and overall community of denton, and i love to see them doing well!

New Release Tuesday: Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Seal

um, teleporting. it's not even a contest. i'd be in paris right now eating decadent pastry with espresso and not caring a whit about your silly little contest. but as it is, i'm here, and would like eric clapton's cd, please.

Favoriting contest: Marc Ribot at the Kessler Theater

i won the tickets! i don't know if i qualify as "cool," but even if i only squeak barely over the "pedestrian" line, you can rest assured that my husband and i had an incredible time at the show last night.

the kessler is a lovely venue. intimate and friendly. it was the perfect setting for this performance. my first time at the kessler and to hear marc ribot, i couldn't have been more pleased. the music was breathtaking, technically brilliant, and delightful. more than once we looked at each other with childish grins, just marveling at the way ribot held the guitar as if it were an extra appendage. he played like a boisterous kid on a swingset and like a craftsman guiding a delicate piece of clay sculpture on a potter's wheel with impossibly deft strokes. the opening tune, attributed to john coltrane, was so audacious that i had to lean over to my husband and whisper in admiration: "who opens with a piece like this?!" the man has balls. i love it.

the conversation with a journalist from the observer was relatively brief, but intelligent. overall, i was more interested in the music than in having the musician discuss his influences or the details of his technique, though i do admit to being interested in those as well. the interviewer conveyed bits of information to the audience in his questions, which was clever and helpful, and ribot's responses were appropriately cryptic and often amusing.

we're already huge chaplin fans (and tom waits fans and film fans--marc ribot is a rock star!), so to see the kid again with a new perspective was truly a treasure. city lights, modern times...these films have lost none of their luster through the years, and i'm so grateful to see them still given such loving treatment in many corners of the artistic community. ok, i'm gushing, but seriously, it was an unforgettable evening. i can't wait to visit the kessler again.

thank you, pegasus news! maybe next time i can write a review? :)

ok, i know it's a random drawing, but i would LOVE to win these tickets. i had been casting around for something to do for my birthday this weekend, and this just may be it! i might attend even if i don't win, but it would be a sweet cherry on top to get in free. crosses fingers....

Sarah Palin to be in Dallas November 10

crap! i looked at houston event instead of scrolling down to the majestic event!

i shall now retire in shame.

if it is truly $500/person, i just want to sit outside and observe the kinds of people who are attending. is that weird?

Sarah Palin to be in Dallas November 10

ok, i am in no way in favor of seeing her/having her come to town (it was creepy enough knowing she was doing a signing at the now-defunct legacy books, just down the street from my work), but to be more accurate about pricing, tickets start at $50 (general admission). the $500 seem to be where sponsorship level packages start.

either way, i'd rather spend $50 playing skee-ball at nickelmania.

Dallas Opera needs YOU, if you love to act and can't sing

ok, this sounds fun. i messaged my husband that "hey, the dallas opera is recruiting extras!" and he responds with, "i feel a hairbrained scheme coming on..." like i'm lucy ricardo.

i'll only be an extra if i can wear a preposterously large headdress and stumble regally down a staircase.

Fuddrucker's makes list of 10 Worst Restaurant Names

ok, ok. i promise to venture into a snuffer's at least once. for the record, it was the name that spooked me. i do gather it's not necessarily the type of place i would frequent often anyway. but the next time i wake up after having too many beers...watch out!

"fuddrucker's" is indeed bad. but the name "snuffer's" always gave me more heebie jeebies. i've never been to the latter, but i imagine they either have a vat of spat tobacco or a morgue out back. or both.

Forever 21 will offer maternity clothes in Texas stores

    giggles sigh too funny.

now if they would just make dresses long enough so i can use them for dresses instead of tunics over pants.

but then i guess knee-length skirts wouldn't help me catch the eye of a randy gentleman who can help me graduate into the maternity line... oh i see their game now. tricksy.

Vote to demolish old Collin County courthouse a Brutal decision

^ hahaha--so true. i was wondering why the style looked so familiar, and then you reminded me that i'd seen it enough in some lovely omsk-ian architecture.

it's a very unfortunate situation, but i do agree that it's not a particularly attractive building.

thanks! while i love midlake, and have recently discovered john grant because of them, i wasn't sure i could fit the dallas show into my schedule that day. now that it's within walking distance of my house, though, i have no more excuses.....whee!

New crop of farmers markets around Dallas sell more than produce

don't forget the denton community market! got my mother's day gifts there last saturday from vendors selling their lovely handmade goods, and ate excellent fish and chips from the angry friar (double-decker bus) in the parking lot.

there were also local musicians serenading the roving shoppers, face-painters, and craft area where kids were making birdhouses out of milk cartons. a resounding success!

looking forward to next month, because i'm saving my pennies for one of those full-fledged potted herb gardens...

it was such a great experience--well worth staying out late on a work night!

next up on my arts and letters calendar--ira glass in june!
