Diego Rivera: The Cubist Portraits, 1913-1917

Your Blurb on the extraordinary Diego Rivera exhibit at the Meadows Museum-on the campus of Southern Methodist University-left out some important information. So Listen Up: Thursday evenings starting at 5PM, everyone gets into the exhibit FREE!! They can stand in awe of Mexico's greatest artist/muralist until 8PM on Thursdays. To "sweeten" the free deal, the Meadows has a stable of "Docents" that lead visitors on a knowledgable, guided tour at 6:30PM each Thursday. The exhibit is really worth seeing, and we in DALLAS are very fortunate to have a place like the Meadows Museum in our town. When I went the first time, I knew nothing about Mr. Rivera and his art. I thought I'd here how Frida Kahlo met and lived with Rivera. But NO. This exhibit takes you from Mexico, where Rivera was born, to Madrid and Paris. That's why his artwork is so fantastic! And that's why you better hurry. The Diego Rivera exhibit ends on Sept. 20th! If you can't go to the FREE Thursday showing. You can go 10 to 5 pm Saturdays and Noon to 5 pm Sundays. Call (214) 768-2516. ONLINE:www.meadowmuseumdallas.org Do what ever but GO!!!!!

Exhibit review: Armando Romero: XX Century Parade

Armando Romero's work seems so outrageous that it's piqued my interest, which was totally unexpected. Why? I'm the type of individual who prefers the classics when it comes to art: Goya, Monet and so on. But something tells me that Romero is using his artwork to send American society a message; maybe it's visual satire as opposed to Johnathan Swift's literary satire. Anyway, I'm intrigued enough to go see for myself.

Si Tapas and Spanish Cuisine opening in Uptown Dallas in old Watel's space

By the way, not everyone knows where WATEL'S used to be. So it would be great if the writer told us apporximately where Watel's is or was. Better yet, where is the new Si Tapas Idelfonso is opening. Gracias!

Si Tapas and Spanish Cuisine opening in Uptown Dallas in old Watel's space

When Cafe Madrid first opened, it was great. While the service was never great, the portions were life-size. On a recent visit, however, I noted that the portions had shrunk considerably. I loved the calamares and gambas al ajio. But the portions had been noticeably reduced. So my conclusion is that I need to "shop around" for Spanish food. I like a place that is not stingy with its portions. Afterall, going out for Spanish fare is not like going out for a hamburger, pizza or a taco. Spanish food is very special and often too expensive to dine on regularly.

    Collin County: diversity and elections

Every Anglo-American, African-American and Minority-American in high school should be required to read: "White But Not Equal" by Ignacio Garcia, PH. D. Then maybe all Americans and all others would learn that Mexicans "paperless" and "papered" were horribly discriminated against in Texas. After the Treaty ending the Mexican War was signed, this group of "unprotected" citizens was reduced to a "second-class" status. A status that still exists today via "National Radio." Radio talk shows airing on KRLD, KLIF and other AM stations. The FCC should prevent this, especially knowing that Adolph Hitler used the radio waves in Germany to inspire hate toward the Jews. Hate toward Hispanics is so pervasive now that it's no wonder they shy away from politics even today!

    Collin County: diversity and elections

My family and I arrived in 1976 in tiny Plano. The first business person I met was Tino Trujillo. The restranteur and owner of Tino's Mexican Food restaurant and Tino's Too, was the most politically active Hispanic in the entire town of 30,000 residents. Believe me, the absence of Hispanics in Plano was evident. But Tino was always there with a handshake and a smile. We could all learn from this Plano icon to get involved. Today, it's true, Plano's Hispanic community has exploded. But you'd never know it. Although here in numbers, they're visible only as shoppers. They aren't city employees. Why? Same old story: Whites are hired first, Blacks are hired next thanks to Civil Rights litigation. Other "minorities" a.e. Hispanics are left on the outside looking in and twisting in the Plano wind. Amazing to see this in 2009. Even having a Plano chapter of LULAC has not changed the status quo......

UPDATED: Allen man misses jury duty, goes to jail for 83 days

Sometimes I wonder if federal laws are being "broken," especially after reading this. Maupin went to jail for failing to report for jury duty. I have lived in Collin County for over 32 years, but I have never been selected for jury duty! Yes. I am not only a "registered voter," but a Homeowner since 1976! Could It Be That The Larger Story Here Is That Only "Whites & Token Blacks Get Called" To Jury Duty? I wish someone would investigate to see if Federal Laws are being violated. Right now I'm reading a book titled "White But Not Equal," so it has me questioning the Collin County Jury Selection System!! Stay Tuned.....

Favoriting contest: Win tickets to (and be in) Dixie's Tupperware Party

Who hasn't heard of TUPPERWARE? I had not heard the word in more than 20 years! But to learn that it's a play/musical? It has to be a Hoot! Memories of Tupperware take me back to Kansas City's RichardsGebaur Air Force Base. We were all young wives of U.S. Air Force "Airmen" with only one stripe. So we sold Tupperware to make ends meet--every chance we got. I have pieces dating back 38 years!! Can't wait to go see Dixie's Tupperware!!

Prestige Ameritech in North Richland Hills ramps up mask making to meet demand in the wake of swine flu fears

Somebody at Pegasus should do an in-depth story on Prestige Ameritech. Maybe they make other types of masks. What I recall is that people in Israel have purchased masks to deal with something as dangerous as swine flu. They fear biological warfare. So maybe PA already manufactures more heavyweight masks just in case we in America ever need them.....

DMN cuts religion beat altogether, reassigns writers

I don't know about Sam Hodges, but I'm surprised Jeff Weiss has not been forced to retire. If this is the same JW I met in 1978, then retirement is definitely another option. Also, consider that since the DMN became a lot more liberal over the last few years, supporting a "religion section" seems laughable.

Woman driver dodges bullet in far north Dallas

These kinds of incidents are becoming too common in the Dallas area. Note: Frankford Road runs east to west,I think. I know this area well, because I travel there often. Hope they catch the jerk!

Denton man builds Little D Guitar Shop into successful labor of love

I really admire people like Gregory Lange. The model he followed-growing slowly and staying out of debt-is one I've seen many immigrants use in the USA. Glad PN sees the value in telling his story.

2009 AFI Dallas Film Festival - Tyson

Mike Tyson is a MONSTER!! Judging from all the news stories I've read about this thug. I can't believe someone would waste their time doing a documentary on this...when there are so many other "worthy" subjects out there. I for one hope people ignore this Jerk's story!

    Texas Fashion Collection

The Texas Fashion Collection's generosity led to SMU's 2007 exhibit of "Balenciaga and His Legacy: Haute Couture from the Texas Fashion Collection." Docents at SMU said that the exhibit broke attendance records. I attended twice, and I just wish the TFC would leave UNT briefly and go on the road with this spectacular fashion exhibit. Texans should be proud and feel lucky to have had oil-heiress Claudia Heard Osborne donate her one-of-a kind Balenciaga gowns and dresses.

New '50s-style diner Rock-and-Rogers opening in Plano

So happy to know that a '50s Diner is finally coming to Plano! We lived in Houston for a couple of years and there were two "let's go to the hop" type diners there. We loved going there. Waitresses donned in nostalgic 50s attire and 1959 Checy. Can't wait until April 7th to go!! RC

Win free tickets to Savor Dallas

Dear SGW: Although I have no young children, my recent visit to the Nasher opened my eyes! What a great place for children to have their young minds stimulated. Check out the "Walking to the Sky" exhibit in particular. Best applause to the Nasher! RC
