Cas Haley advances on America's Got Talent

I'm rooting for Cas too, but don't forget about the other local - Mesquite's own Terry Fator. I've never seen anyone pull off anything like this, not sure I'd be into a whole show of it, but definitely held my attention for a couple minutes. It was pretty remarkable:

If this keeps the Mavs from making a serious play at Matt Barnes then it is a mistake

UPDATED: John Pierson comments on Michael Moore and Sicko

The reason I was asking for your definition of propaganda is that I have no problem with someone using ideas and facts to further their cause. I think propaganda takes on a negative connotation when UNFOUNDED allegations are used to further an argument. Whats unfortunate, is I most commonly hear the word propaganda used by people to discredit organizations or individuals that take they disagree with in lieu of giving substantive examples for why their position on an issue is more reasonable.

While I certainly would agree that Sicko is a position piece, I think it is a lazy argument to negatively refer to it as "propaganda" and not support that claim with specific examples. In fact, I would argue that any statement referring to something negatively as propaganda without supporting that claim with any specific examples or evidence is an intrinsically hypocritical statement.

I'm unclear J_Mortimer, what exactly is your definition for a sound argument and what is your definition for propaganda. I just want to understand the distinction you are trying to make.

    USA! USA! USA!

Its always an incredible tournament. Looks like you are right though, I've always thought of it as a best of the best high school tournament, but not so. At least for team USA its a mixture of high school and college as you noted.

Why Sammy Sosa shouldn't be on the All-Star Team

Michael Young is still a much better pick. He is a better all around hitter. Also he seems to be much more of a leader in the clubhouse. Oh, and did I mention that Young actually fields when he's in the lineup?

I like having Sammy on the Rangers, but he isn't deserving of the All Star Game this season. Michael Young should be the Rangers representative.

    Oakley-Leppert

Frankly those videos that you just posted Mike are the ones I think the Leppert campaign out to be using for their ads. Currently the ads being used make Leppert seem like a mild mannered, happy-go-lucky, aw-shucks kinda guy. But the truth is that Leppert is an extremely intense individual, and that intensity gives him a presence in any room he steps foot in. To me, that is as big of a positive differentiator in Leppert's favor as any single issue. I like the Leppert talking to Tracy Rowlett much more than the Leppert in his campaign ads.

This is a professional news organization, I'd appreciate it if everyone would respect that and not use colloquial terms such as "boobies." Could we please use the correct anatomical terminology? Call them "love bubbles"

DMN makes non-issue of the gay issue in the Dallas mayor's race

Your point is well taken Shawn. You can't draw absolute parallels between any two groups of minority status. In this case, you are right that if you walk down the street and pass a gay man, you can't know that he is gay. But when you pass a black man on the street, chances are that you know he is black.

I think there is some potential for very interesting studies looking at how much of a difference this specific distinction makes in a political election.

While I certainly believe this distinction exists, I have to admit that it always makes me uneasy when we begin comparing the discrimination faced by different groups of people. In this case, I'd point out is that the visual difference is responsible for discrimination or at the very least enhanced discrimination for both the GLBT community as well as the black community, but for the complete opposite reason. Part of the problem for the GLBT community is that their sexual orientation can't be known on site. In fact, supercharging that is that a member of the GLBT does not know that aspect of their identity until they reach their teenage years. As a result, there is the closet effect of feeling unable to let the world know the entirety of their identity for fear of extreme discrimination. This has led to staggering numbers of teen suicides in this country.

My point is that we can and should point out distinctions and differences in the type of discrimination faced by members of different minority group. I just want to guard against the urge to compare who has the largest societal obstacles to overcomes. The larger issue is that systemic bigotry and discrimination does exist. In my opinion, we need to continue to work hard to shine light on and eliminate obstacles that are faced by members of any minority-status group.

As Shawn notes, we can't pretend like the issue does not exist. Without question, it is a very real issue in this mayoral runoff.

140 days is a long, damn time for lawmakers

Scott's focus was criminal justice legislation. And he did a terrific job.

There will always be both state and local news that we miss. Not intentionally, but its just a matter of picking out shots while resources are low. But thats why we also encourage our readers to chip in and help out when they believe that certain events or issues are being under-reported or under-discussed.

Otherwise, we'll just keep doing our best.
