Global Swarming: Reflection and Exploration of Colony Collapse Disorder

Sometimes we need to put the "no" in "innovation." Honeyville, a honey-producing business in the Rockies, has had no Colony Collapse Disorder. The owners believe their bees remain healthy because they are exposed to no pesticides and minimal pollution, and because they get complete nutrition from organically grown native flowers. It's hard to argue with the results.

    Movie review: Public Enemies

There are, I believe, only two professional movie reviewers in the US who have the knowledge and sheer cajones to discuss armaments in cinema. One is Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Hunter, whose novels display the depth of his authority on the subject.

But Mr. Hunter retired recently, so that leaves only -- John Meyer!!

Most historians agree that the Tommy gun is what elevated Dillinger from being just another two-bit hoodlum. John, thank you for your sidebar on weaponry; it gave your readers historical perspective unavailable from other reviewers.

    Wildscaping North Texas: episode 3

Nancy, thank you!! And how strange to have Black Swallowtails on a thistle feeder! Since these adults eat only nectar, perhaps the thistle is emitting some sweet stuff as it ages. Or the butterflies may simply find it a safe spot for basking. Odd indeed!!

Texas Governor Rick Perry vetoes TV recycling bill

Apparently all that lead leaked directly into the Gov's own drinking water. Lead causes brain malfunction, right?

Organic gardening: the stinky, humus-rich underbelly

Hi Rawlins!! I use that brand too, among other organic products. I got it at one of the east Dallas organic nurseries: either Rohde's, Redenta's, or Walton's. Don't know where you're located, so if you google Howard Garrett, his website includes a comprehensive list of organic nurseries in North Texas.

Nestle issues recall for Toll House cookie dough

The hubby just forwarded me this info .... he didn't know it, but I was literally eating raw cookie dough at the time!! What a dilemma.....

AHEM, the 'splaining from "Honey" here: we actually sometimes do get the un-stinky kind. You just don't notice it, because it doesn't smell. Any kind of compost will do the basic job of loosening up the soil, but cotton burr compost naturally has extra nitrogen, which is important for plant development. After it's watered down, you don't even know it's there.

Wildscaping North Texas: thinking outside the boxwood

LyleDAL: as a TeeSipper I must express condolences re your move to Oklahoma. ;) But I hope you're happy there, and I'm glad you're still plugged in to PegNews. Please keep up with future Wildscaping segments! OKC and DFW are pretty similar in soil type, climate, plants, and critters, so you should be able to apply the info. Let us know what works for you!

Scott, thank you for your comment -- shade gardening does have special requirements!! There are a lot of wildscape plants for shade, and we'll review that in a future segment.

Palms and bananas are pretty, and I look forward to reading other people's tips on them. But they don't have any wildscaping value -- no nectar, no berries, no caterpillar food, minimal if any nesting area. So for true wildscaping, you'd use those plants only as a decorative accent.

Dallas Studio Movie Grill plans 40th anniversary screening of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

I'm curious what people find to be the most quotable quotes in this movie. My favorite is Redford's pained "I can't swim!" when they're faced with the choice of either jumping into a river or fighting the posse. Other ideas?

Some people don't need a costume to get called a witch

Halloween has no partisanship -- it is simply a time to celebrate the child in all of us. And trick-or-treating is a great way for kids and their parents to reach out, meet a few neighbors, build a sliver of community. This lady missed every opportunity to be a decent person -- truly a Wicked Witch!!

    Meanwhile, in our nation's capital...

There is an actual Pegasus-connection here. In the 1960's, the Ambassador-to-be spent his boyhood summers in Central Texas, and grandparents ferried him into Dallas every so often. When the Dallas skyline became visible from Highway 67, he was always the first child in the car to spot -- and claim for his own -- the "Flying Red Horse."

To further the Dallas connection, the Ambassador's father, George, was born in Dallas and came of age with it, in many respects. He helped create the bird dioramas you see in the Natural History museum, and in the 1940's was a lifeguard at White Rock Lake, which at that time was decked out like a real swimming pool. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High and SMU.

    Front porch metamorphosis

The author's better half here. Apparently our friendly front porch now has a rep among the local caterpillar population -- because just today we got ANOTHER chrysalis on the front door! This one will become a Buckeye butterfly. And two more Buckeye chrysalises are under construction nearby. Too cool!

    Jeremy, thanks for that website!!

Coyotes thrive in Old Lake Highlands

Coyotes are night predators and prefer to eat critters the size and weight of a rabbit. If a parent is so thoughtless as to leave a toddler outside, unattended, at night, the child is more likely to be a victim of a human predator than a coyote.

Photo gallery: AFI Dallas opening night gala at the Majestic Theater

I especially liked the photo of Lauren Bacall, although she looked like she was trying to speed past the camera. It's pretty amazing to think that the love of Bogie's life was right here.

    Movie review: Maxed Out

I've often wondered why it is that people whose income is approximate to mine often live in huge houses, drive expensive cars, wear the latest fashions. Now I realize that unless they have a fairy godmother, they're probably living on borrowed money and borrowed time. I don't understand why people risk their financial health to try to impress strangers. Can anyone explain that?
